Indictment In Rilya Wilson Case

(Miami, Florida) Remember Rilya Wilson? The 4-year-old daughter of a crack-addicted mother turned up missing while in state foster care in Florida which scandalized the Department of Children and Families. Two caretakers were investigated about her disappearance and prosecuted for child abuse, however, to this date, Rilya has not been found.

Well, it appears that one caretaker, Geralyn Graham, 59, incriminated herself to a jailhouse informant while serving time for the child abuse charge. She admitted that Rilya died from "smothering and/or suffocating and/or beating" and her body was left near a canal in South Miami-Dade. This allegedly occurred about 16 months before she was determined to be missing. A search by investigators found no body.

As a result of Geralyn Graham's admission, a grand jury indicted her for murder yesterday. Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle stated, "No, we don't have a crime scene. No, we don't have a body. But we feel we have enough evidence." For the defense, Graham's lawyer, Brian Tannebaum, believes the evidence is dubious.

"You've got one of the most significant missing child cases in the world and you're going to rely on a jailhouse snitch?" Tannebaum said. "The bottom line is: Where is this child?"

Consequently, it appears the defense will contend that Rilya is still alive and not murdered.

If her body was placed next to a canal in South Florida a full 16 months before it was known she was missing, there's little chance it would have been found. The investigators would have lost out to the alligators.

Maureen Dowd Likens George Bush to Clark Gable

In today's NYT, columnist Maureen Dowd relays some thoughts on last Saturday's Gridiron Dinner in Washington. She writes,

I sat next to a presidential gag writer, Landon Parvin. He was saying jokes work best when Republicans make fun of Republicans and Democrats make fun of Democrats.

President Bush, looking spiffy in white tie and tails, swung by to talk to Mr. Parvin. He didn't look my way, but proceeded back up to the dais.

Suddenly, W. turned around, stopped and looked right at me. Then he flashed a wink, not a flirty wink but a mischievous Clark Gable "I've got your number and you think you've got mine but I win" wink.

This is telling. It seems that Dowd is an accomplished wink reader. Go figure. Now I've always thought that a wink was not much different than a simple nod of the head or a salutatory wave of the hand. But, no! According to MoDo, a wink can be compared to recollections of winks by movie stars to discern its subtle intricacies. In this case, Ms. Dowd saw President Bush as a "mischievous Clark Gable" communicating, "Frankly, Mo, I win."

I wonder. By conjuring up the image of tall, dark, handsome Clark Gable in a wink of George Bush's eye, is Dowd growing soft on the President? Does she now subconsciously see him as a sexy, leading man rather than a political adversary? Can we expect some kinder, gentler words from Dowd when she writes of the Bush administration? Maybe next we'll see some words about George Bush's broad shoulders and his disarming smile.

Nah! On second thought, probably not.

Lawsuit Claims Discrimination For Being "Too French"

(Cincinnati, Ohio) A former instructor at the University of Cincinnati, Nathalie Doucet, 46, has filed suit in U.S. District Court alleging discrimination after she lost her job at the school for being "too French." She seeks her job back or monetary damages. A university spokesman has denied Doucet's claims, stating she lost her job because she was not a satisfactory teacher and wasn't improving her skills.

Specifically, the lawsuit complains that:

Doucet was labeled anti-American by a student's parent and told by an administrator that she was "too French."

Doucet also was humiliated by an administrator who rejected her approach to a research project by saying that it was "not the way Americans do it," the lawsuit alleges.

Now a permanent resident alien living in San Francisco, Doucet was born in France, apparently in whine country.

Cleveland Public School administrators will surely dance in the halls since it's been announced that the latest, albeit unofficial, data indicate a soaring high school graduation rate. Although the numbers need to be verified and won't be official until August, there's reason to believe that a high school freshman in Cleveland has slightly better than a 50-50 chance of graduating in four years.

Director Spike Lee Criticizes Rap Lyrics, Videos

(Toronto, Canada) On Monday night, film maker Spike Lee told a student audience at Ryerson University that "gansta rap craziness" in lyrics and video images has convinced young blacks that being smart equals white so they fail school on purpose. Instead, black students are lured into believing it's cool to be a pimp or a ho.

"These artists talk about 'ho this, bitch this, skank this' and all the other stuff. They're talking about all our mothers, all our sisters. They're talking about their own mothers, grandmothers."

"You have to have knowledge of self and knowledge of history. Because if you had that you would not use that terminology. You would not even be in that mindset. And we're in a time when young black boys and girls want to be pimps and strippers, because that is what they see. . . . Something is definitely wrong."

Lee received standing ovations at the start and end of his monologue which was scheduled to help mark the International Day For the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21. Lee joins entertainer Bill Cosby in being a prominent African-American speaking out against the current rap music culture and he encouraged consumers to send a message to the gansta rap industry by not buying its products.

Ban On Same-Sex Marriage Ruled Unconstitutional

(San Francisco, California) Boy, it seems that hardly a day goes by without somebody stirring the political pot in California. That's what happened yesterday when Judge Richard Kramer of the Superior Court of San Francisco ruled that the ban on same-sex marriage is contrary to the "basic human right to marry a person of one's choice."

Naturally, the ruling was celebrated by the gay crowd and criticized by conservatives. Logically, Kramer's decision is just the first volley in a lengthy legal battle and no reason to get too excited about right now. And, relying upon the opinion of one legal scholar, the California Supreme Court is "likely to hold that the opposite-sex-only requirement is indeed constitutional."

'Dead Woman' Comes Alive During Post-Mortem

(Kitami, Japan) According to a report in the Mainichi Daily News:

Police officers preparing to perform a post-mortem examination on a woman whose lifeless body was found near a river in Hokkaido were forced to halt the process after her heart began beating in the mortuary.

The 27-year-old woman, whose name has been withheld, was whisked to a hospital after it was confirmed that she was alive, and she later regained consciousness. She is reportedly making a recovery.

I don't easily get spooked, but I think this type of incident would do it.

School Board OKs Administrator Raises Despite Huge Deficit

(Akron, Ohio) To address a projected deficit of $6.7 million, the Akron School Board has laid off teachers and plans to place a school levy on the ballot later this year. Other cutbacks in spending are also planned. Nevertheless, the board voted yesterday to raise the pay of 160 school administrators at an estimated cost of $250,000 to $300,000. As a result, twelve administrators will be pulling in $100,000 or more in the next year.

This move by the school board members doesn't make a whole bunch of sense to me. It seems that using the $250,000 to $300,000 for classroom teachers would be more beneficial than having higher paid administrators. Obviously, I don't understand the process.

Glenn Beck Booted, Replaced by Jerry Springer

(Cleveland, Ohio) Effective March 21, NEWSRADIO WTAM 1100 will debut the Springer On The Radio program from 9:00 to 11:30am weekdays. Springer replaces Philadelphia-based conservative talk radio host, Glenn Beck.

It's unclear exactly why Clear Channel Radio has made the change. The only explanation provided is, "We've been listening to 'Springer on the Radio' since it launched, and have been positively impressed by Jerry's rapid development as an issues-driven talk radio host," according to Clear Channel VP, Kevin Metheny.

Whatever the reason, this change is the first I've heard where a conservative radio talk show host is replaced by a liberal, although Springer apparently prefers to be called a progressive, at a large broadcast station.

Laxative Prankster Arraigned

(Medina, Ohio) Here's a follow up on a previous report of night shift nurses feeding laxatives to patients to make the day shift nurses' jobs more difficult. One of the two Willowood Care Center nurses involved in the prank, Kim Koah, was sentenced to 10 months in prison last week after pleading guilty to patient abuse.

The other nurse, Susan Mejak, 38, was arraigned yesterday in Medina County Common Pleas Court before Judge Christopher J. Collier. Mejak pleaded not guilty to five counts of patient abuse and was ordered to appear for trial on June 27. She is free on bond.

Boy! They sure pulled a good one on the day shift nurses, eh? It'll be good to have something to chuckle about while in the slammer.

In the literature provided with the medication, the prescription information starts with:

Bicillin C-R (penicillin G benzathine and penicillin G procaine suspension), contains equal amounts of the benzathine and procaine salts of penicillin G. It is available for deep intramuscular injection.

Penicillin G benzathine is prepared by the reaction of dibenzylethylene diamine with two molecules of penicillin G. It is chemically designated as (2 S , 5 R , 6 R )-3,3-Dimethyl-7-oxo-6- (2-phenylacetamido)-4-thia- 1-azabicyclo [3.2.0] heptane-2- carboxylic acid compound with N,N' -dibenzylethylenediamine (2:1), tetrahydrate. It occurs as a white, crystalline powder and is very slightly soluble in water and sparingly soluble in alcohol.

Definitely not a page-turner, yet the information stream goes on for another few thousand sleep-inducing words before one gets to see this sentence.

This drug should not be used in the treatment of venereal diseases, including syphilis, gonorrhea, yaws, bejel, and pinta.

Consequently, it makes sense that some people may have used this medication, or any medication, prior to fully reading the accompanying technical literature. Obviously, individuals preparing medical prescription information do not write for the average reader, much less the sick average reader.

It is, therefore, entirely understandable that over 600 people were administered the wrong drug for syphilis by the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center before one person finally read the enclosed package insert. The clinic is trying to notify all individuals who received the medication, but it's believed that at least 200 people are still unaware. This is significant since the initial symptoms of a syphilis infection disappear after a time and the disease progresses. So, it's possible that some people who received the Bicillin C-R think they have been cured when, in fact, they're still carrying the disease.

Reasonably, one has to ask who is responsible for this incident? Hundreds of people, patients and health providers, didn't read the package insert. Of course, they are all to blame. Nonetheless, I can't shake the feeling that package inserts (and other medical information disseminated to the public) should and could be more reader friendly.

As a general observation, it seems that the number of female teachers reported in the news as having sex with students equals and possibly exceeds the number of male teachers doing the same. I don't have data to support the observation and I've only been watching for about a year, so I could be dead wrong.

It's also worth mentioning that two names were intentionally not included on the list, Pamela Smart and Mary Kay Letourneau. I assumed that their high-profile stories were fairly well-known and both occurred a number of years ago. The list is meant to display recent incidents.

Head Start Program Allegedly Scammed

(Cleveland, Ohio) Employees of Ohio's largest Head Start agency, the Council for Economic Opportunities in Greater Cleveland, have apparently been scamming taxpayer dollars by erroneously reporting numbers of children enrolled and failing to meet requirements for numbers of low-income enrollees. Additionally, concerns have been raised about excessively high salaries and travel expenditures for Head Start managers which are far above federal compensation guidelines.

One former Head Start employee, Lorann Pierzchala, has come forward and stated that she was instructed to pad the enrollment as a common practice. She was not allowed to remove a child from a class roster when the child had stopped attending unless there was a replacement. Pierzchala worked for Cleveland's West Side Ecumenical Ministry from 2000 to 2003. She was laid off in April 2003 and told her chances of getting unemployment would hinge on her signing a non-disclosure agreement with Head Start to "not speak negatively of your job duties or of your employment relationship ...." Since national security is surely not involved, one has to assume that the non-disclosure agreement was to hide something sensitive, confidential, or fraudulent. You make the call.

According to Steve Barbour, spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, a fiscal management review of the Cleveland Head Start Program is scheduled for May.

Cleveland Serial Rapist

(Cleveland, Ohio) Starting in 1996, a serial rapist has been active in the Cleveland area, targeting women from 13 to 54. So far, nine separate rapes have been tied to one criminal by DNA analysis. According to Police Chief Ed Lohn,

"In 1996, they had a green pickup truck. In 2002, one of the victims reported that he had some sort of a ringworm infection on his right thigh. In 2004, he had a maroon car and has some knowledge of Cleveland State University," Lohn said.

The rapist is described as black man with bulging eyes weighing 150 to 200 lbs.

'De-Gendered' School Restrooms

According to this report, liberal activists have pressured several schools of higher learning to provide "de-gendered" restrooms for the student body. Those named include the University of Chicago, Beloit College in Wisconsin, Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y., the University of California at Santa Barbara, City College of San Francisco, and the New College of California. The new bathrooms will be devoid of urinals and are specifically provided for transsexuals, cross-dressers and those with a "fluid, androgynous identity."

Is everybody clear on this issue? I'm not, but I might have seen one of those fluid, androgynous folks in a Schwarzenegger movie. I don't recall whether they had their own bathroom, though.

Culling African Elephants

(Gabarone, Botswana) A Botswana ministry official stated that President Festus Mogae will confer with Zambian President Levi Mwanawasa for support in downgrading the endangered species status of African elephants to allow culling. Huge elephant herds are blamed for destroying the environment in Botswana and Zambia.

Similarly, in South Africa, Hector Magome, Director of Conservation for South African National Parks, stated that:

"We are strongly leaning towards culling and we want the public to digest this hard fact."

In South Africa's Kruger National Park, about the size of New Jersey, elephants are depleting vegetation to the point that their food supply is threatened. Four options are being considered, the first being culling. Second is relocation, third is contraception, and fourth is a combination of culling and contraception. The easiest, cheapest, and most effective is culling.

Needless to mention, animal welfare groups will protest loudly. It's also expected that a distinct objection will be raised by countries which have a significant problem with ivory poachers. As long as ivory is allowed to be harvested during authorized culling, poachers will be able to mix illegally obtained ivory into the market. Countries with recovering herds, such as Kenya, fear an increased incentive to poach.

My take is that just about any controversy regarding animals becomes global news. As an example, dolphins beach themselves in Florida and it's news in Australia. And who hasn't heard about the apparently fragile caribou in Alaska. Consequently, within the next few months we can all expect to see the media make African elephant culling a global crisis.

State Senator Wants Toilet Paper Tax

(Tallahassee, Florida) Democratic Florida lawmaker Al Lawson, has proposed a 2-cent per roll tax on toilet paper with a goal of collecting $50 million for sewer system upgrades.

The bill needs to be passed in the Republican-controlled legislature to become law which currently seems unlikely. Nonetheless, what's most troubling about the proposal is reflected in the following statement by Senator Lawson:

"Two cents is not going to hurt families at all," he said. "This is one thing people don't mind paying for."

He conveys a general attitude of nasty arrogance and condescension about confiscating the public's money. He knows what's in people's wallets and he knows how people want to spend their money. Just like opening the spigot, eh, Senator Lawson?

Wouldn't it be nice if there were fewer lawmakers who want to raise taxes and more who want to sunset expensive and ineffective programs? And, as an afterthought, isn't the state of Florida still trying to find hundreds of kids who disappeared in the foster care program?

Former Teacher Admits Sex With Her Student

(Mobile, Alabama) Melissa Daw Green, a 35-year-old former math teacher at Satsuma High School, has admitted to having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student. She explains:

"I was really going through some hard times, and this teenager was paying attention to me and flirting and then a relationship formed," Green said. "He was one of the very few who ever flirted with me. In the past, I had never given it a second thought. The only thing that I could say was different this time was the hard time I was going through."

Well, Melissa, boo-hoo and kindly shove your sob story. I've had hard times and I've been around flirtatious teens, but I haven't played with fire. And, responsible teachers don't have sex with their students.

Eastern Europe Luring U.S. Companies

According to FAZ.NET, a recent survey conducted annually by the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) indicates that Eastern European countries are achieving increasing success in attracting U.S. manufacturing investment away from Germany. Participating in the survey were two-thirds of the 50 largest U.S. companies in Germany, including Ford, Proctor & Gamble, and Coca-Cola.

American companies plan to continue to invest in Germany, however, the largest job-creation business activities, such as automobile and industrial goods manufacturing, are going to Eastern Europe. Also departing Germany are call center and information technology services.

In the area of financial services, the trend is for companies to pass up locating in Germany in favor of Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Great Britain, countries considered to offer better business opportunities.

The results of the survey come as no real surprise, rather they confirm what has been apparent. The German economy labors with a dismal and enduring unemployment rate in excess of 10% and government reforms have been instituted to improve circumstances. Nevertheless, current German social and labor reforms haven't improved its reputation as a business location. Companies participating in the survey cite persistent concerns with high taxes, high wage rates, and government regulations.

The longer-term outlook for Germany is troubling also as the Central and Eastern European nations, called the CEE-8, progress toward greater privatization. With more and more CEE-8 state-owned properties being sold to private interests, alternatives are available for U.S. and other foreign companies to invest in less regulated economic environments. At present, private sector business produces from two-thirds to over 80% of the income for the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Slovakia, Lithuania, Poland, Latvia and Slovenia.

In conclusion, as long as a company sees a way to reduce the cost of doing business by relocating its operations, it will move. And, it appears that some places are cheaper than Germany for certain business activities.

From a person perspective, naturally I'm relieved that Nichols is in custody, but I'm still angry. Three, possibly four, people have been murdered because of a procedural inadequacy in the Atlanta Courthouse. Somebody needs to go to school.

It is also worth noting that I've been watching the story play out on television, going from channel to channel, and it seems that Fox News was more informative than the others.

(Medina, Ohio) Nightshift nurses at Willowood Care Center face abuse charges for feeding laxatives to patients so that the dayshift nurses would have a tougher time at work.

N. Korean Increased Drug Trafficking

According to an ABC News Online report:

North Korea has shifted its focus to drug trafficking from dwindling missile exports as a major revenue source to cover its huge trade deficit, senior US administration officials say.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Robert Charles, who is responsible for international narcotics and law enforcement affairs, noted a significant difference in North Korea's exports of $650 million compared to imports of $1 billion.

"Fifty per cent of the imports are paid for through sources of revenue that are not legitimate or legal and that the majority of the illegitimate revenue is likely to be directly tied to drugs," he said.

"We ... have a very strong view that illegal drugs, in particular heroin and methamphetamine stimulants, are probably the biggest illegal revenue generator in terms of the overall net revenue that is used to make external purchases."

So, it appears the NORKS are doing a little dealing to help pay the bills. Just great.

On MSNBC just now, Bo Dietl, former NYC detective, offered $10,000 of his money for the capture of Brian Nichols who killed three people in an Atlanta, Georgia, courthouse escape earlier today.

Female Teacher Caught Naked With Student

(Anderson, South Carolina) A 33-year-old, married, female science teacher at Westside High School, Donna Carr Galloway, will avoid criminal charges after being found naked with a 17-year-old male student because the age of consent in the state is 16. The boy went to T.L. Hanna High School and, therefore, was not one of Galloway's students.

Apparently, authorities caught a naked Galloway and the boy doing the back seat bossa nova in a vehicle about 11:30pm last Friday night. She was suspended from her teaching job with pay.

It seems that the state of South Carolina doesn't have clear guidelines on how to deal with situation such as this incident. If the age of consent is 16, essentially half of the student body could be mixing it up with the faculty and no laws would be broken. Hopefully, the school systems establish clear rules and harsh punishment for teacher-student sexual relationships.

Nevertheless, without specific state laws barring teachers from seducing teens, it seems that South Carolina may be allowing unscrupulous teachers to abuse their authority. Additionally, those teachers could bounce from school system to school system without ever acquiring a public record of their sex-related peccadilloes with students.

The South Carolina legislature might want to re-evaluate the rules governing teacher-student sex.

27 Illegals Arrested in North Carolina

(Greensboro, North Carolina) On Tuesday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested 27 illegal aliens from Sudan, Chile, Peru, Zimbabwe, the Philippines, Venezuela, Mexico, and Laos at the Piedmont/Triad International Airport. Authorities said all were carrying counterfeit documents. They were charged with violating immigration law and will be scheduled for deportation proceedings. Of course, in the meantime they'll probably be let loose and disappear. Several of those arrested had been ordered deported before and ignored the orders. What a shock!

Also disturbing is another report where it appears that at least 20 of the illegals had valid North Carolina driver's licenses and other "worrisome documents as varied as federal airplane-repair licenses, fraudulent Social Security documents, counterfeit green cards and a falsified passport." In addition, two of the illegals had FAA licenses to work on some of the most technical parts of airplanes. All in all, the embarrassment of the whole incident will soon fade as the criminal blame diffusion process is fully implemented to assure that no actual corrective measures are implemented.

Interestingly, had they been carrying "approved counterfeit" documents, such as Matricula Consular cards, they probably wouldn't have been arrested and, instead, immediately qualified for generous government handouts. But, really, nothing matters anymore now that the U.S. has adopted a policy of only pretending to have effective border controls. America's borders leak. Agent Orange Lawsuit Dismissed

(Brooklyn, New York) Federal District Judge Jack B. Weinstein issued a 233-page dismissal of a lawsuit against U.S. chemical companies claiming war crimes against Vietnamese civilians from Agent Orange. The judge concluded that "There is no basis for any of the claims of plaintiffs under the domestic law of any nation or state or under any form of international law."

Computer-Assisted Remote Hunting

It's seldom that gun owners and animal rights advocates agree on an issue, so this controversy is notable. Gun and animal lovers are both outraged at the practice of shooting animals via the Internet.

But John Lockwood, creator of the Live-Shot Web site, said the people trying to ban the practice do not understand how it works.

A Web camera is mounted in one area of the range, and both the camera and the gun can be manipulated remotely by computer. Lockwood said someone on the ground controls when the safety is off the gun to make sure there are no accidents and that the gun is not fired at an animal that is not eligible to be killed.

He said the camera is set up on a 336-acre ranch near San Antonio and the view is no different than that of someone who might be sitting in a blind waiting for an animal to come close.

"The camera only overlooks a small portion of the land," he said. "There is no guarantee that you'd get something."

Apparently, participants subscribe at the website, pay fees, get a Texas hunting license, and blast away. Lawmakers are being asked to pass legislation to curtail the practice, however, there doesn't seem to be a basis to make it outright illegal. Various bills have been introduced in 10 states and efforts are underway to have Congress act.

One last thing, John Lockwood claims he created the site to allow the handicapped and disabled the opportunity to experience the thrill of the hunt. How sporting. Personally, it would be nice if Lockwood created a site which enabled the hunting of terrorists.

Singapore: Surge in AIDS Linked to Gay Parties

According to a report in the Straits Times, experts believe a sharp rise in AIDS cases can be linked to yearly gay parties on Sentosa Island, just south of the main island of Singapore.

Calling it an 'epidemic', the Senior Minister of State for Health told Parliament that the number of new cases of Aids infection rose 28 per cent last year, from 242 to 311.

Nine out of 10 of the new Aids sufferers are men and a third of them are gay. There are more than 2,000 Aids patients in Singapore now.

Dr Balaji said an epidemiologist - an expert in the spread and control of diseases - had suggested to him that the spike might be linked to the Nation parties held every August on Sentosa.

The Nation parties, which attract a predominantly homosexual crowd, could have allowed 'gays from high-prevalence societies to fraternise with local gay men, seeding the infection in the local community', he said.

The Nation Parties, held annually since 2001, have attracted up to 8,000 predominantly homosexual men. The Nation Party organizer's leader, Stuart Koe, criticized as 'irresponsible' any linkage between AIDS and gay parties. Koe also criticized the government for not targeting gay men in AIDS advertising campaigns.

Since Singapore is a small and very disciplined country where just about every aspect of life is regulated, it's fairly certain that the government will institute corrective measures for the surge in AIDS cases. Just what will be done remains to be seen.

Disgusting High School Payback

(Coeur D'Alene, Idaho) As payback to the fellow student who put peanut butter on his cheese sandwich, a 17-year-old Coeur d'Alene High School classmate anonymously sent the student some personally-frosted semen brownies. The goodies were gobbled up by the recipient and two others.

The student was arrested and charged with disturbing the peace and rightly so. He's disturbed me with his disgusting prank and I'm in Ohio. Naturally, as a minor, the name of the prankster wasn't released but I'm sure he's acquired a local reputation. As such, he'd better watch his back and be extremely careful about what he eats from now on. Paybacks can be hell.

'Oldest Man' Actually Dead For Years

(Itami, Japan) Kyujiro Kanaoka had been hailed for years as the oldest resident in Hyogo Prefecture. He was believed to be age 107 and every year the mayor would send him gifts on Respect For The Aged Day. Unfortunately, after Kanaoka's 75-year-old son expressed some concerns, police found his mummified body on a living room futon. An autopsy estimated that Kanaoka had actually died of illness or natural causes between five and 10 years ago.

The son and two sisters aged 79 and 72 had lived together with Kanaoka. They had kept his kimono-clad body in the first room of their house in Itami. The body had mummified. The futon on which the body was laid was surrounded by religious amulets, charms and notes. The offspring left meals beside the old man's body every day.

Holy moly! You would imagine that somebody would have noticed.

Truck Bomb in Central Baghdad

A garbage truck loaded with explosives blew up near Iraq's agricultural ministry and Sadeer hotel in Baghdad, killing at least two people and wounding more than 20 others.

The blast happened when a bomber drove the rubbish truck close to the ministry and the hotel before detonating the explosives. More than 20 cars were destroyed in the attack.

Before the explosion, at 6.30am (0330 GMT), rebels (sic) fired a rocket-propelled grenade onto a checkpoint in the main road to the agricultural ministry and Hotel Sadeer.

"I saw a black BMW pull up to the checkpoint and shoot one guard. There was a change of guard at the time. The BMW killed the guard and cleared the way for the garbage truck to enter," witness Haidar Hamid said.

It's believed that the primary target was the Hotel Sadeer which is used by Iraqi police and foreign contractors.

Alcoholic Soft Drink Kills Eight

(Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea) According to this report, six men and two women in their 20s and 30s died over the weekend from a toxic alcohol-laced soft drink. Authorities say that methanol or ethanol was stolen or bought at a chemical store and mixed with soft drink in 500ml bottles for sale on the streets.

California Jobs Group Caught Outsourcing

(Sacramento, California) A jobs-creation group funded by business and supported by Gov. Schwarzenegger, Citizens to Save California (CSC), has been outsourcing work to India. The move has been defended as being a small part of the group's total effort. Nonetheless, political opponents and critics are accusing the organization of being disingenuous because there is no shortage of Californians able to do the work.

Responding in a press release, the CSC stated that the controversy "is another desperate, political stunt" and a "thinly veiled attempt to derail" the reforms needed to improve the job climate.

The outfall of the controversy remains to be seen, but one thing is certain. With the outsourcing and jobs issues always potentially explosive, it seems the CSC committed a serious political blunder by allowing the outsourcing of work to India. Tsk, tsk.

Navistar Wins Contract for Afghan Army Trucks

(Warrenville, Illinois) Truck manufacturer Navistar International Corp. has been awarded a contract to supply more than 1,800 trucks valued at $311 million to the Afghan National Army with possible future orders bringing the total value to $467 million. Navistar is also supplying more than 1,000 buses and trucks for the Iraqi reconstruction.

(Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) After drinking 50 shots of tequila at a disco Sunday night, Ricardo Ivan Garcia, 21, was declared the winner of the contest. He then died due to alcohol poisoning. His competitors are in serious condition.

Ohio Executes Murderer

(Lucasville, Ohio) Convicted of the 1987 death of Mary Bradford by stabbing her in the neck and chest and then raping her as she lay bleeding, William H. Smith, 47, was executed by lethal injection at 10:19 a.m. at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility. Smith has been forever deterred from committing future crimes.

Stairwell To Heaven

Two state child support workers face a disciplinary hearing after a colleague claimed she saw the two workers having sex in an office stairwell.

Christine Giangola, a worker at the state Office of Child Support in Columbus, said she was climbing the stairs Jan. 24 at the Rhodes Office Tower when she spotted supervisor Marcus Lee and analyst Teresa Mathias allegedly having sex.

New York Homeless Survey

(New York City) Last night, volunteers spread out in teams through the city's boroughs to count homeless people. According to this report, results won't be available for several weeks as various analyses are completed. Interestingly,

For quality control, the city sent out 150 college students - some dressed as homeless people - to test the survey takers' diligence.

Kim Hopper, a Columbia University professor who has studied homelessness extensively, is coordinating the experiment and will later review how many of his students were found by the volunteers.

So it appears that college students are going to be hiding as homeless people and the survey takers will try to find them. I don't know if this makes sense to anybody else but it seems loony to me. The basis of correlating the finding of college kids with finding vagrants escapes me. A more logical control would be to search for rats because they inhabit the same digs as vagrants. I doubt you'll find the college kids with the rats despite how they're dressed.

Mention needs to be made that the outcome of the survey is predictable in at least one regard. The homeless advocacy groups will be outraged and spitting venom. Since they get paid based upon the number of homeless, they will naturally complain that the totals reflect a egregious undercount and the methodology was flawed.

Cincinnati Woman Threatens Judge

(Cincinnati, Ohio) With a history of psychological problems, Courtney Ann McFinley was arrested and is in jail accused of threatening U.S. District Judge Susan Dlott. McFinley sent Dlott a letter that included photos of U.S. District Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow whose husband and mother were shot to death Feb. 28 in Chicago. McFinley's arrest comes concurrent with an increased national focus by U.S. Marshals on security of judges and prosecutors.

As she has been described, it appears that McFinley is seriously mentally ill and belongs in a mental hospital. Nonetheless, that doesn't make her less of a threat.

Boeing Boss Booted

(Seattle, Washington) Boeing announced that 68-year-old CEO, Harry Stonecipher, has resigned at the request of the executive board over an ethics scandal. Although married and a veteran swordsman way past his libidinous prime, Stonecipher had a consensual affair with an unnamed female executive which he didn't attempt to conceal. He did have sex with that woman, admitting it almost proudly.

By being able to resign rather than be fired, Stonecipher will see millions in retiree and pension benefits.

Prince Charles and Bare-Breasted Protesters

(Wellington, New Zealand) About 500 hundred fans greeted Prince Charles in Wellington today while a small group carried placards and protested. Two of the reported six protesters even bared their breasts in attempting to disrupt the royal visit.

With "Get your colony shame off my breasts" written on her body, police quickly took Hannah Plant, 23, away. Other protesters carried placards reading "honour the treaty" and "death to the monarchy." Oddly, although there were few protesters, they sufficiently mixed their messages to a degree that their primary complaint wasn't clear. And nobody thus far has bothered to define "colony shame." Of course, it could be speculated that these protesters actually have no real grievances and have adopted generic activism as a lifetime hobby. Regardless of the issue, they'll take it to the streets.

(Madison, Wisconsin) Boy! Once the animal rights crowd gears up for this debate, we're sure to have a humdinger of a donnybrook. A 48-year-old firefighter, Mark Smith, from Lacrosse, Wisconsin, has proposed that free-roaming domestic cats be classified as an "unprotected species" subject to hunting by anyone with a small game hunting license. The proposal is on the agenda for consideration by the Wisconsin Conservation Congress in April.

Some believe the feral cats need to be controlled due to the devastating effect they have on wild bird populations.

University of Wisconsin-Madison wildlife ecology professor Stanley Temple, who trapped more than 100 cats and analyzed their stomach contents during a four-year study, has estimated that between 7.8 million and 219 million birds are killed by rural cats in Wisconsin each year.

On the other side are those that believe there is a humane way to handle the feral cat problem. Cat lovers have proposed trapping, sterilizing, and releasing with the apparent logic being that they'll all die of old age and the problem will be eliminated. With the U.S. feral cat population estimated to be between 60 and 100 million, the catch-and-release option doesn't seem very workable.

It seems that the controversy boils down to the simple question of who is more likable: Sylvester or Tweety? Remember, Granny was constantly having to hit Sylvester with her frying pan or umbrella or broom to protect Tweety. So, if life follows art, today's feral cats are destined to be hit, but not with a frying pan or umbrella or broom. They'll be hit with small caliber ammunition.

Female Teacher Charged for Giving Porn to Boy

(Lodi, California) Last Wednesday, a Bear Creek High School 10th-grade English teacher, Janet Kim Alexander-Low, 39, appeared in court with her attorney and husband to hear charges related to providing pornography to a 15-year-old male student.

The specific charges included attempted lewd acts on a child, exhibiting harmful material to a minor, misdemeanor child molestation, and solicitation to engage in lewd acts. Alexander-Low, who also goes by Kim Alexander, is out on $78,000 bond and has been suspended from her teaching position.

[Update 04/16/05] According to this report, Alexander pleaded guilty yesterday before San Joaquin County Superior Court Judge Stephen Demetras to misdemeanor child molestation, exhibiting harmful material to a minor, and soliciting another to engage in a lewd act. She also must surrender her teaching license. Since her solicitations to the 15-year-old became known before any actual physical contact, she wasn't charged with a felony.

Sentencing has been scheduled for April 28. Alexander may still be get up to a year in jail in addition to the provisions of the plea agreement.

Anti-Gun Activist Arrested For Illegal Gun

From a report in the State Journal-Register:

A Springfield woman who began lobbying against gun violence after her son was shot to death in 2002 was arrested last week when police allegedly found an illegal gun and drugs in her home.

Annette "Flirty" Stevens, however, said Monday she's innocent, and the arrest is an attempt by police to get her to give up information about unsolved crime in the city.

The handgun, which had a scratched-off serial number, and drugs allegedly were discovered Friday morning inside Stevens' home in the 2500 block of South 15th Street. Authorities said they obtained a search warrant for the residence as part of an ongoing investigation of a recent series of drive-by shootings. No one has been hurt in the gunplay.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted in the search.

This story has been picked up by many in the blogosphere since last week and I customarily wouldn't repeat it for that reason. However, it's just too good an example of the hypocrisy typical of many anti-gun advocates. They're anti-gun for other people, not for themselves. (via Dustbury)

Doctor-Assisted Suicide Attempt Fails

(Portland, Oregon) It's not known whether a malpractice suit will be filed but David Prueitt, 42, is clearly upset that he is alive. Apparently, his doctor didn't prescribe a sufficiently lethal combination of drugs for him.

Obviously, the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners or state Board of Pharmacy will have to revise their procedures to assure that people are effectively snuffed when requested. How inept does a doctor have to be that he can't even kill a person reliably?

Gunfire at Teen Birthday Party

(Columbus, Ohio) During a birthday party at the VFW Hall last night, five teenage boys were shot when a fight broke out. Beechcroft and Northland High School students were involved and the Franklin County Sheriff's office believes the incident is possibly gang-related. All five of the wounded were hospitalized.

You know, I've been to hundreds of birthday parties and not once have I thought about packing heat.

Female Teacher Has Sex With Boy and Then Father

(Boca Raton, Florida) Here's a twist on the increasingly frequent 'female teacher has sex with male student' story. Boynton Beach public school music teacher Carol Flannigan not only had a lengthy sexual relationship with a boy, starting at age 11, but she also sharpened his dad's pencil.

It appears that Flannigan first started having a relationship with the boy in 2002 and was arrested in 2004. At some point, she also became involved with the boy's father.

The boy's father says in the deposition that he had the same sort of sexual relationship with Flannigan, 50, that former President Bill Clinton had with Monica Lewinsky. But the document refers only to oral sex and points out a red dress that may or may not contain a DNA sample.

The father said he met Flannigan for the trysts at his home, the movies and once on a college campus. "I wouldn't call it romantic," he says in the deposition that makes reference to occasional meetings for sex.

Flannigan, a music teacher in Rolling Green Elementary in Boynton Beach, is awaiting trial on one count of capital sex assault on a child under 12 and one count of lewd or lascivious assault stemming from her alleged relationship with the man's son. The first count carries a mandatory life sentence.

But wait, there's more. Apparently, Flannigan's husband, Doug DePue, was aware of his wife having sex with the boy, so the boy's family filed a civil suit against him. The suit was settled out of court with DePue paying the family $1.5 million.

In summary, 50-year-old female teacher has sex with 11-year-old boy then his father who gets paid $1.5 million. Sheesh! This almost makes the Mary Kay Letourneau story seem boring.

License Law For eBay Sellers

Okay, here's the deal. Starting May 2 in the state of Ohio, thanks to a law signed last month by Gov. Taft, sellers on eBay will be required to have an auctioneer's license. To obtain a license, an individual must complete a one-year apprenticeship under a licensed auctioneer, including 12 gigs as bid-caller, attend an approved auction school, passing a written and oral exam, and pay a license fee of $200. In addition, a $50,000 bond must be posted.

The penalty for failing to comply with the law by selling on eBay without a license is a $1,000 fine and up to 90 days in jail.

Now that the implications of the new law have become known throughout the state, many people are surprised and concerned, including the primary author of the legislation, State Sen. Larry Mumper. It appears there wasn't sufficient thought put into drafting the law and it is being viewed as a form of harassment toward the multitude of eBay traders. Sen. Mumper and other politicians, including Gov. Taft, are seeking to provide clarification for the law prior to its effective date. Consequently, we can now expect that a new piece of paper will be written and issued to explain the previous piece of paper that became law.

Of note is the fact that several other states have or are trying to come up with schemes to regulate Internet auctions and, so far, none have been successful.

Cell Phones in School

(Cleveland, Ohio) The school board is seriously considering lifting the ban on cell phones in Cleveland public schools. Hopefully, due consideration will be given to the generally annoying and disrupting nature of cell phones. Don't count on it though. Historically, the Cleveland school board's decision-making prowess hasn't seemed to emphasize the teaching environment which largely explains why the school system has one of the most dismal graduation rates in the nation.

Asian Chicken Feet and Avian Flu

(Cleveland, Ohio) On Thursday, the Ohio Department of Agriculture issued warnings to local health departments regarding illegal chicken feet after seizing five frozen packages from the Dong Duong grocery in Cleveland. According to Paul Panico, the Agriculture Department Food Safety Chief, chicken feet were also found in three Columbus stores and another in Franklin County. Food King Inc. of West Haven, Connecticut, imported more than four tons of the chicken feet from Thailand labeled as jellyfish and distributed the product to 68 stores in 11 states.

The federal government banned imports of Asian poultry and poultry products last year to prevent the possible spread of avian flu. The flu has been blamed for deaths in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam within the past year and medical experts fear a possible worldwide pandemic. The virus spreads rapidly, jumping directly from birds to humans, and kills an astonishing 70% of humans infected (33 deaths in 45 cases reported in 2004). Very disturbing is the report of one case where a Vietnamese boy apparently had the avian flu not only in his lungs but also throughout his body. And, even though over 100 million birds have been slaughtered, the flu continues to spread.

Companies are urgently working to develop a human vaccine for avian flu, known as H5-influenza, or H5N1. Last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) distributed an avian flu virus strain to major vaccine manufacturers all over the world to develop a Pandemic Influenza Vaccine.

Bill Maher Interviews Ward Churchill

Jeff Jarvis at the BuzzMachine should be applauded for his strong constitution demonstrated by liveblogging the Bill Maher HBO program interview of Ward Churchill. Their dialogue comes across as no more than an exercise in supporting each other in believing that Americans deserve to be hated. The reasons aren't made exactly clear. Churchill remarks about "immaculate genocide" while Maher pushes the theme that Americans have blood on their hands and are lazy, arrogant, greedy, and myopic.

Dope Grower Kills Four Canadian RCMP Officers

(Mayerthorpe, Alberta) There's a shock wave across Canada at the news of four Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers being killed yesterday while investigating a marijuana growing operation in Rochfort Bridge, Alberta. Crazed cop-hater James Roszko, 47, blamed for killing the RCMP officers, also died.

Const. Peter Schiemann, 25, Const. Anthony Gordon, 28, Const. Lionide Johnston, 34, and Const. Brock Myrol, 29, were found slain inside a Quonset hut containing the marijuana growing operation.

Large-scale marijuana operations in Canada, often linked to organized crime, have produced an atmosphere of extreme violence which threatens the public and law enforcement. Some believe it's time for Canada to rethink its overall drug strategy and increase the penalties for marijuana growers.

It seems the Canadian policy of decriminalization of marijuana has unintended and deadly consequences.

Beslan Massacre Suspects Killed in Raid

According to Russian Deputy Prosecutor General Nikolai Shepel, a raid by Russian police resulted in the arrest of four suspects in last September's Beslan school massacre. Another five suspects were killed while resisting arrest. Authorities believe that those arrested helped plan the siege and murders in Beslan. The location of the raid was not specified.

Aryan Brotherhood Threatens Texas Cops

The FBI Anti-Terrorism Division has issued a warning that the white supremacist Aryan Brotherhood of Texas prison gang may try to murder Texas police officers to gain reputation. Apparently, the threat became known by monitoring an internal conflict within the Aryan Brotherhood.

Female Teacher Confesses to Sexual Assault

(Flatwoods, West Virginia) A 37-year-old sixth-grade teacher has been charged with having sex with four children under the age of 16. Toni Lynn Woods of Braxton County Middle School faces eight counts of third-degree sexual assault for having sexual intercourse with three different juveniles a total of four times and oral sex with two juveniles a total of four times. The ages and gender of the children were not indicated in the criminal complaint.

Evidently, police officers began an investigation when they were alerted by a family member of one of the children. Flatwoods is a small community not far from Cutlips in central West Virginia.

(Seoul, South Korea) It's being reported that the North Koreans have discovered a new angle in verbally attacking the U.S. The Natural Conservation Union Central Committee has bitterly denounced the U.S. for "their terrible environmental pollution � (on) its aggressive military bases, drill ground, bombing ground and firing ranges." It seems the primary complaint is that the U.S. plan to reorganize its bases on the peninsula "would reduce the whole land of South Korea to a living hell where natural and ecological environment would be severely polluted."

Of course, this all makes absolutely no sense since the U.S. wouldn't even be there if the North Koreans hadn't already claimed first dibs on turning South Korea into a living hell. What does make sense, though, is that North Korea is looking to garner support from leftist environmental groups.

Interestingly, at the same time that the NORKS are spewing their rhetoric about the environment, a major controversy is bubbling in an adjacent far eastern neighborhood. A proposed U.S. Marine Corps Air Station on Okinawa has fired up protesters throughout Japan, including Greenpeace. In fact, Greenpeace's unjustifiably buoyant Rainbow Warrior arrived in the port of Naha this week to take part in two weeks of planned protests encompassing the disruption of a prerequisite environmental seabed survey for the airport.

Just a thought, but maybe the North Korean's nascent interest in the environment is a call to be noticed by the chum bucket of greenies gathered in Okinawa this week.

Massive Pedophile Trial in France

(Angers, France) A huge criminal trial of 66 men and women charged with child rape is underway in the city of Angers, 150 miles southwest of Paris. A special hall had to be constructed to accommodate the participants in the trial including: 60 lawyers, 45 victims, and the accused. Proceedings will be closed to the public and are expected to last four months.

The defendants are accused of "buying" children aged 12 and under from their parents for paltry sums of money or cartons of cigarettes. Most of the child rapes occurred at the apartment of Franck Vergondy between 1999 and 2002. Vergondy and convicted sex offender Eric Joubert founded the pedophile ring. Three defendants face possible sentences of life in prison while the others are looking at three to 20 years.

For some reason, there's no mention of charges against the parents for bartering their children as sex toys. It seems they should be culpable of something illegal.

Skateboard Killer

(San Luis Obispo, California) On the heels of the Supreme Court decision that children who commit capital crimes should be sent to their rooms, a 13-year-old boy was charged with four felonies: murder, elder abuse, residential burglary, and auto theft. He allegedly broke into the home of Gerald "Jerry" O'Malley, 87, beat him to death with his skateboard and, along with a 12-year-old accomplice, stole his vehicle.

Interestingly, Ryan Huff of the San Luis Obispo Tribune, adds this related information about young murderers:

While it's rare for children younger than 14 to commit murders, it does happen almost every year in California. There were 20 such cases from 1999 to 2003, according to state Department of Justice statistics.

Somehow, I've got to find the California dictionary of the English language. You do the math. My ciphering has it that a murder is committed in California about every 90 days by a kid under 14. Apparently, "rare" in California means "regular and predictable."

No Stench Allowed Law

(San Luis Obispo) The County Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance last month stating that people with "body odor constituting a nuisance" can be expelled from the public libraries. Apparently, the public is in agreement with the law but the media, acting as an unofficial pro-stench advocacy for the homeless, have made it an issue. Library Director Brian Reynolds wishes that journalists would find another story.

Mary Mapes Shopping Rathergate Book

Joe Hagan reports in The New York Observer that Dan Rather's producer for 60 Minutes Wednesday, Mary Mapes, is shopping a book proposal which will be an inside account of what happened at CBS news during the National Guard memo scandal.

The book will constitute Ms. Mapes' defense against charges of journalistic misconduct. According to Wesley Neff, president of the literary and lecture agency that is representing Ms. Mapes, the producer plans to argue for the veracity of the four memos supposedly typed by President Bush's former National Guard squadron commander, Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, in the early 1970's.

Ms. Mapes' book proposal will include 40 pages of analysis and documentation that she offered to the panel to back up the documents' authenticity. In an addendum to that material -- supplied on the condition it not be directly quoted -- Ms. Mapes avoids direct discussion of fonts and character spacing.

Instead, she argues that the substance of the memos meshes with Mr. Bush's known records (the panel had claimed the documents clashed) and that inconsistencies in their format could have reflected the work of different typists - as found, she argues, in some of the official records.

So, she's going to prove that the fake documents are accurate, but she won't allow her supporting documentation to be quoted. Since the original case against George Bush was based on fake documents, the case could not be supported. Nonetheless, Mapes now feels that she can write a book, keeping her supporting documentation secret, which proves the original case was true. Holy moly, I hope there's a video. This is confusing. And frankly, Mapes sounds like she's going to just repeat the "fake but accurate" blather we've already heard from Rather.

On another note, Hagan also mentions that CBS had official (the independent panel) and unofficial (private eye Erik T. Rigler) investigations being conducted simultaneously and separately. Interestingly, Rigler was hired by CBS News President Andrew Heyward to find the original source of the fake Air National Guard documents and ultimately identified six "suspects" who may have given them to Bill Burkett.

One suspect, J.R. Rodriguez, was a former guardsman who was contacted and denied any knowledge of the documents. None of the other five are identified in the article.

In conclusion, Mapes is writing a book which will likely continue pressing the "fake but accurate" angle and a private investigator has a list of names (Rodriguez and five others) who potentially authored the fake documents. Personally, I like to see all the names on the list.

The Search For 'Greener' Bullets

According to this report, there has been an enduring concern about toxic metals used in weapons contaminating the environment and harming human health. Consequently, non-toxic alternatives to depleted uranium and lead have been sought. One choice has been weapons-grade tungsten alloys which have been believed to be limited in toxicity. Unfortunately, the belief that tungsten alloys are relatively non-toxic was not based on actual testing. As such, it came as quite a surprise when research results found that tungsten alloys actually cause aggressive cancer tumors to develop when embedded in flesh as shrapnel.

The research team, led by John F. Kalinich of the Heavy Metals Research Team of the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, implanted rats with tungsten alloy pellets, along with pellets of nickel and tantalum as control metals, and monitored results. Findings were that "100% of the rats implanted with tungsten-alloy pellets developed extremely aggressive tumors surrounding the pellets, although tumor growth was slower in rats implanted with lower doses. The tumors then rapidly metastasized to the lungs of the rats, necessitating euthanasia of the animals well before the anticipated end of the study."

The replacement of depleted uranium and lead with tungsten is considered a 'greener' approach to battlefield weaponry, however, if the initial research is validated by further study, Dr. Jim Burkhart, of Environmental Health Perspectives, believes that "soldiers could be at risk of surviving battlefield wounds only to develop an aggressive form of cancer."

My take is twofold. First, making wholesale changes in the manufacture of weapons based upon unsupported assumptions about the toxicity of tungsten is irresponsible. Some corrective measures should be implemented to assure that future management responses to greenie motivated political initiatives are sound, measured, and scientific. Flying off willy-nilly to do something without thinking things through is negligent.

Secondly, and correct me if I'm mistaken, but battlefield munitions are designed to kill people and the addition of tungsten to weapons makes them more lethal. So, by finding that the 'greener' bullets are more lethal, everyone is upset. With that logic, it appears that the search is not for a 'greener' bullet. The search is for a less lethal bullet. I'm confused.

In closing, the research thus far has not even touched on the relative threat of tungsten in the environment. The initial changes to tungsten alloys were made to eliminate the harm caused to water and food supplies by uranium and lead left on the battlefield. For all anyone knows, tungsten may be well suited for that purpose. Unfortunately, saving the water and food supplies may result in more deaths from battlefield wounds.

(Hudson, Ohio) Remember this guy's name. Hudson school bus driver Norbert Olzmann, 61, blew a 0.13 on the Breathalyzer after it was reported he appeared intoxicated. He was charged with driving a commercial vehicle under the influence and child endangering.

Steve & Virginia Pearcy - Ideological Cultists

(Sacramento, California) To refresh foggy memories, Steve and Virginia Pearcy have created a vortex of bitterness in Sacramento by their offensive and insulting acts toward their community, their neighbors, their renters, and, by extension, the majority of America. An effigy of an American soldier hung by a noose around the neck along with a Saddam Hussein Iraqi flag were hoisted on their second home to announce their anti-American political beliefs. If that wasn't enough, they also displayed a large banner which specifically called the residents in the neighborhood "idiots" along with President Bush.

The Pearcys maintain that they are just exercising their right of free speech, which is fine, but that doesn't give them the right to disturb the peace and subject the neighborhood to harassment which, it seems, is more likely their aim. I admit to following this story from a distance, comfortably relying on Diggers Realm to keep me informed of the latest developments, and have nothing to add other than an observation.

In my mind, the Pearcys have been displaying a perfect cultist devotion to radical leftist political ideology. It makes no difference whether they are right or wrong because there will be no discussion, no debate. Up goes the offensive effigy and the insulting banner and the Pearcys skip town to their primary residence in Berkeley, leaving only the shocked and sickened sensibilities of the people who actually live in the neighborhood. It seems that the Pearcy's idea of political debate in a free society is supporting your beliefs by throwing a turd in the punchbowl. Grade school incorrigibles often do the same thing, however, they try to be anonymous in their mischief. On the other hand, ideological cultists seek recognition for their mischief.

Man Has Sex With Cows

No, this is not another Clinton-bashing story, it's a report out of Wisconsin where a 63-year-old man routinely visited a farm after the strip clubs closed and had sex with cows.

Harold G. Hart, of Neillsville, has been charged with illegal sexual gratification with an animal along with disorderly conduct and two counts of obstruction. He faces a possible nine months in jail on each charge. A March 10 court date has been scheduled.

According to police, Hart apparently admitted to tying a rope around the neck of cows to have sex "at least 50 times." It's been rumored, however, that he only picked the cute ones. Even so, this may explain why some cows are mad.

(Sacramento, California) Updating last week's report, McClatchy High School student teacher Margaret De Barraicua was arraigned yesterday on four counts of statutory rape for her continuing relations with a 16-year-old boy in her class. According to the criminal complaint, De Barraicua was sharpening the boy's pencil for more than five months before she was arrested.

Another Woman Boffs Another Boy

(Grand Haven, Michigan) Pregnant 34-year-old mother of four Stephanie Elizabeth Bissell pleaded guilty to criminal sexual conduct for having sex with a 14-year-old boy.

According to Bissell's attorney, Richard Zambon, the boy is the father of her unborn child which is due in May. Sentencing is scheduled for June, after the birth of her child. Bissell faces a possible 15 years in prison for the crime. Although currently married, she's in the process of getting a divorce from her husband Bill.

Mention needs to be made about Bissell's other four children and just how screwed up their lives will be. They're probably all school age, susceptible to teasing which will surely occur, about to lose their intact family, and their mother may be going to prison. I don't think there are enough hugs in the whole universe to make their pain go away. They'll be scarred for life.

Evidently, the victimless older woman-younger boy rite of passage scenario is a myth.

Terrorists At Internet Cafes

Dr. Rusty Schackleford has the scoop on outlining the problem with Internet cafes being relied upon by terrorists for drug-running, gun-running, and planning and directing their murderous campaigns. The Internet cafe issue was raised in a Newsday report discussing the elusiveness of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. According to Dana Ahmad Majid, head of security for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan which controls the autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq,

"Telephone communications in Iraq are difficult," Majid said, "but the Internet is everywhere and it is difficult to track."

Dr. Rusty contends that the terrorist's ability to communicate needs to be shut down and it could easily be done by closing the cafes. I tend to agree. Alternatively, it would be fairly easy to at least adulterate their communications and make life miserable. My experience with ISPs and website providers is that they are experts at screwing up communications by accident. Imagine how creative they could be if they did it on purpose.

Condoms For Convicts

(Sacramento, California) State Assemblyman Paul Koretz (remember this guy's name) has proposed legislation to allow distribution of condoms in prisons so convicts can safely perform sex acts that are illegal. Under the proposed legislation, AB 1677, the state of California would not sanction prison sex but would allow health groups to distribute condoms, "dental dams" (used in oral sex), and other sex-related protective devices (whatever those are). So far, there's been no mention of lotions or creams or hot tubs or stimulating mood music.

The proposed law also requires the Department of Corrections to properly dispose of used sexual devices that "protects the anonymity of inmates and the health of correctional officers."

I don't know how the state could claim that it's not sanctioning prison sex because it sure seems as though that's exactly what's occurring. In fact, I'd say they are going further than just sanctioning. By providing a veritable shopping list of sex paraphernalia, the state would be accommodating and encouraging prison sex.

Also, over and above the fact that the state is turning its back on illegal acts being committed within its purview, there must be a legal liability aspect to providing sexually-oriented protective equipment. What if the condom or other device failed to protect? Wouldn't the state of California be liable for compensatory and punitive damages?

Condoms for convicts is a bad idea.

ACLU To Sue Rumsfeld

(Washington) The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Human Rights First plan to file suit today in U.S. District Court charging Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and other senior officials with responsibility for injuries to prisoners in custody of U.S. Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The two groups issued a statement contending that prisoners were physically and psychologically injured through torture and other cruel and degrading treatment. Details of the lawsuit will be announced at a news conference later today.

A previous attempt to have Rumsfeld prosecuted by a German court, which claims world-wide jurisdiction for human rights cases, was unsuccessful.
