THE RED HAT SOCIETY

(Springfield, OH) Celebrating their first anniversary, the Springfield branch of the Red Hat Society, elderly women in red hats and purple outfits, celebrated at the Woman's Town Club last Thursday.
The women were bedecked in every shade of purple and every shape of hat. Clothing ranged from dark suits with elegant scarves and high heels to simple sweaters and sweatshirts. Hats were both short and wide brimmed, decorated with bright boas, flowers or ribbon.

Members were eager to share where they and others found their hats. A few came from out-of-state, but others prided themselves on scouring local thrift stores, flea markets and antique shops. Some hats were homemade, like the old cowboy hat covered with a red negligee.

Nationally, the society began six or seven years ago, said Mary Ann Tayloe, the queen mother, or founder, of the local group. Now the society has branches in six countries, including more than 300 in Ohio.
Their purpose is to have fun and turn heads.

Just in case you happen to see a bunch of women dressed like Barney, you'll now know why. Pretty nutty, eh?
