Scientists at the University of Iowa have discovered that the introduction of live pig whipworms into the digestive system can be an effective treatment for inflammatory bowel disorders like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
"With our new impressive results, we can come out of the closet," said Dr. Joel Weinstock, a gastroenterologist at the University who has developed the treatment. There used to be a time when finding worms in the closet meant it was time to clean it, not announce it.
