Survey - Many Brits Never Heard of Auschwitz
According to a survey by BBC Two Television, 45% of 4,000 people questioned said they had never heard of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp where more than a million Europeans were exterminated by the Nazis during WWII.
This is appalling and the direct result of an education system that doesn't teach relevant history. The Brits should be rightfully concerned about the survey results. It was only by virtue of a geological barrier, the English Channel, that the British Isles were able to avoid having many of their finest people become victims in Auschwitz or another concentration camp.
Don't get me wrong, I haven't deluded myself into thinking that the results of a similar survey of Americans would produce anything better. In fact, I'd wager a box of donuts that no more than a third of all Americans would be familiar with Auschwitz. The teaching of history is not emphasized in the United States. There isn't time. Academicians are too occupied trying to revise it.
