Aussies Win Nobel Prize in Medicine
(Perth, Australia) Congratulations to Dr. J. Robin Warren, 68, and Dr. Barry J. Marshall, 54, for going against conventional wisdom and proving that bacteria cause stomach ulcers, not pizza, nor tacos, nor stress.
Subjected to years of ridicule by the establishment, they were vindicated yesterday upon being awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. According to Lord May of Oxford, president of the Royal Society, the researchers "produced one of the most radical and important changes in the last 50 years in the perception of a medical condition." Ulcers are now easily treated with antibiotics whereas they weren't treated at all before the doctors' discovery. The result is marked improvement in the health of millions of people.
Warren and Marshall will split the $1.3 million prize money.
