(Marion County, Florida) As most people know, teacher Debra Lafave pleaded guilty to irresponsibly and criminally engaging in sex with a 14-year-old boy. Subsequently, she was sentenced in Hillsborough County Court to no jail in accordance with plea deal which some people considered outrageous. But the story doesn't end there.
Unfortunately for 25-year-old Lafave, when she was engaging in sex with the boy, she was committing crimes in two different jurisdictions. Although her case has been settled in Hillsborough County, it remains to be adjudicated in Marion County.
Yesterday, Marion County prosecutors and Lafave's attorney, John Fitzgibbons, presented a plea agreement to Judge Hale Stancil to resolve the charges against Lafave. Unexpectedly, Judge Stancil rejected the plea agreement and set April 10 as the trial date.
According to Ric Ridgeway, a spokesman for the State Attorney's Office, Judge Stancil said he had some concerns which needed to be addressed. The attorneys have promised to have a new plea agreement before the scheduled trial date.
Consequently, the soap-opera sex saga of Debra Lafave continues. Stay tuned.
