(San Francisco, California) On October 19, 2005, 24-year-old Lashuan Harris undressed her three children, one by one, and threw them into the cold water of San Francisco Bay.
Six-year-old Trayshaun Harris, two-year-old Taronta Greeley Jr. and 16-month-old Joshua Greeley drowned. Only the body of Trayshaun Harris was ever found.
Today, Harris' trial began. She faces three counts of murder and three counts of assault causing the death of a child under 8 years old. Harris previously pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Fortunately, she has a friendly prosecutor.
From MercuryNews.com:
"I'm sure you will have no doubt that this woman is mentally ill," prosecutor Linda Allen said during her half-hour opening statement. "You will believe this woman had hallucinations. And you will believe that she thought God commanded her to kill her children."How nice? The prosecutor argues for the defense. Maybe prosecutor Linda Allen would prefer to bypass the jury?
Nonetheless, the jury is responsible for determining Harris' guilt and whether she was legally sane. Hopefully, they won't be influenced by the prosecutor's seemingly inappropriate pronouncements.
[Update 01/19/07]
Harris ruled insane.
