(Farmington Hills, Michigan) In July 2006, 41-year-old Jami Lee Knox was charged with engaging in a months-long sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy, her son's friend. In November, Knox pleaded no contest in accordance with a plea deal to three counts of criminal sexual conduct and three counts of using a computer to commit a crime.
Today, Knox was sentenced. Under sentencing guidelines, Knox faced between three and 15 years in prison and she received the minimum of three years.
"I'm truly, sincerely sorry for the pain and destruction I caused," a tearful Jami Lee Knox told Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Rae Lee Chabot during her sentencing Tuesday. The boy's parents were in the courtroom for the sentencing, as was Knox's husband, Michael, who has attended all of her hearings. The case has generated considerable attention locally and not everyone is satisfied with the perceived fairness of the process. Based on comments on this blog and others, the general consensus has been that Knox wouldn't be treated with reasonable severity by the court. That was before today.
I'm anxious to see the reaction to a three-year prison term. I think it's fairly safe to say that Jami Lee Knox has ignited strong emotions in the community.
