(Hartford, Connecticut) On appeal, the convictions and sentence of former teacher Tricia Coccomo were overturned in 2009 after the Appellate Court found that the trial judge improperly admitted evidence.
Subsequently, the Coccomo case was appealed to the Supreme Court.
Yesterday, the Connecticut Supreme Court reinstated manslaughter and drunken-driving convictions by a 4 to 3 split decision and ordered the Appellate Court to affirm the convictions and prison sentence.
It's not clear what happens next since defense lawyer Robert Bello has hinted that the case may be appealed in federal court. If not, Coccomo will presumably be cuffed and incarcerated to serve her 12-year sentence.
Convicted Teacher Sentenced
[Previous 4/27/07 post]
(Stamford, Connecticut) In February, former second-grade teacher at the International School at Rogers Magnet in Stamford, Tricia Coccomo, was found guilty by a jury of manslaughter and driving while intoxicated in a 2005 crash that killed three people. Coccomo crossed the center line in her car while drunk and hit another vehicle head-on, killing the driver, James Inverno, 72, his wife, Barbara, 58, and passenger, Glenn Shelley, 23.
Today, Tricia Coccomo, 34, was sentenced in State Superior Court to 20 years in prison with eight years suspended.
Don't drink and drive.
[Update 05/04/07]
Coccomo freed on $1 million bail while appealing her conviction.
