Mom Gets Prison for Sex with Boy

(Easton, Pennsylvania) In February, mom of teens Nancy Smith, 47, pleaded guilty to charges related to engaging in a years-long sexual relationship with a boy, starting when he was age 14. Smith's son introduced the 14-year-old to his mother who started a sexual relationship in 2001. By 2004, the boy was also having a sexual relationship with Smith's teen daughter, ultimately getting her pregnant.

When Nancy Smith discovered her daughter was pregnant, she called the authorities and essentially revealed to the entire civilized world that she was ignorant of her culpability as a child molester. Police refused to act on the tip since there was less than four-years difference in ages between him and the girl, however, the investigation revealed that Smith had also been having sex with the boy. Imagine that. In April 2006, Smith was arrested.

Today, Smith was sentenced by Judge Paula A. Roscioli to 26 to 90 months in state prison and fined $2,000. Smith put on a display of contrition.
Choking back tears throughout the proceeding, Smith made several attempts to explain how the affair unfolded, at one point taking a long pause to blow her nose and take a sip of water.

"Your honor, I am truly, truly sorry. At the time I was so blinded by what was going on I couldn't see anything," Smith explained. "I couldn't see around me. All I could see was him."

A sexuality counselor who evaluated Smith said she posed a medium risk to re-offend. The counselor also said Smith was amenable to treatment but continues to see herself as the victim and not the boy.

Roscioli said that in the evaluation, Smith described the boy as "extremely mature for his age," and told the counselor he was "14 going on 40."

"You still don't get it," Roscioli said. "The fact that you described the victim as '14 going on 40' tells me you still don't get it."
In addition to prison, Smith's criminal behavior caused her to lose her job, her home and, presumably, her husband since they have separated. The long-term harm to the victim and the Smith family is incalculable.
