Accused Teacher Resigns

(Hornbeck, Louisiana) In May, a 39-year-old eighth-grade teacher at Hornbeck Junior High School, Maurna Thornton, was arrested for alleged inappropriate behavior with a 14-year-old male student. The Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office was alerted to the alleged offense by the victim's parents.

On Monday of this week, Thornton resigned her position with Hornbeck Junior High School. According to Vernon Parish Superintendent Cynthia Gillespie, Thornton has found other employment.

Thornton has been charged with one count of felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile. A November trial has been scheduled before Judge John Ford.

Thornton remains free on $25,000 bond.
