Miss Belgium Booed

(Brussels, Belgium) In a country with a majority Dutch population, the new Miss Belgium embarrassingly cannot speak Dutch.

French, Czech and English-speaking Alizee Poulicek, 20, is unintentionally contributing to a political battle that is organized along linguistic lines.

The Dutch-speaking Flemings in the northern part of Belgium comprise about 60 percent of the population and they regularly demand that all Belgians speak Dutch. The French-speaking south doesn't necessarily agree.

As a result, when Alizee Poulicek was introduced on stage to the audience in Antwerp, she was booed. I'm personally perplexed because Poulicek wasn't selected as Miss Belgium for what comes out of her mouth.

Think about it. When Miss Poulicek voices her plan for saving the Earth, most people tune out anyway.
