Texas Teacher Gets 6 Months for Student Sex
(Huntington, Texas) In April 2008, a Huntington ISD teacher, Melissa Beth Williams, was charged with having an improper relationship between an educator and a student. Reportedly, the mother of the 17-year-old male victim alerted authorities.
Yesterday in Angelina County Court, 42-year-old Melissa Beth Williams pleaded guilty to engaging in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student in accordance with a plea agreement.
As a result, Williams was given a 10-year sentence with the provision that after serving six months in prison, the remainder will be served on probation. Terms of the probation haven't yet been reported.
As a reminder, several years ago Texas legislators made it a felony offense for a teacher and a student to have a relationship, despite their ages. Otherwise, the age of consent in Texas is 17.
Notably, Williams has four children, one of which is a male high school student the same age as her victim.
