(Greeley, Colorado) In an unusual case, a 26-year-old male Guatemalan national, illegally in the United States, Isreal Velasquez-Zarate, was arrested last week for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl. The alleged consensual sex with the 13-year-old reportedly occurred in 2006 when the mother of the girl alerted authorities.
However, two days after alerting the police, the girl's parents told officers that they had talked it over and refused to cooperate with the prosecution of Velasquez-Zarate.
When police tried to contact the parents again a month later, the mother again said she didn’t want the police to investigate. Then, two weeks later, the mother called police again to have charges filed against Velasquez-Zarate.Hard to believe? I agree. In fact, "If you promise not to have sex, I'll let you sleep with my two young daughters," sounds like something out of a Henny Youngman joke book.
The mother said he’d signed a contract with the parents to marry their daughter when she became 16 years old, and he promised not to have sex with her anymore, but he broke his promise.
Police began questioning family members again and learned the girl’s mother allowed Velasquez-Zarate to sleep in the same bed with her two daughters — the 13-year-old, and her 12-year-old sister. The mother believed they would not be sexually active because of Velasquez-Zarate’s promise.
It's hardly surprising that Velasquez-Zarate didn't keep his promise and a warrant was issued for his arrest. That was two years ago and the girl's family told police that Velasquez-Zarate went back to Guatemala.
However, Velasquez-Zarate was picked up during a traffic stop last week and booked into custody at the Weld County Jail without bond. He also has an immigration hold placed on him.
