(Fort Myers, Florida) Last December, two students at Royal Palm Exceptional Center, a 17-year-old male and a 15-year-old female, reportedly snuck behind a classroom bookshelf where the girl performed a sex act on the boy.
The two students were supposed to be supervised by Thomas McCoy, an educational support employee, who instead was engaged surfing ESPN.com on the Internet.
Another school employee walking past the room, Virginia Newsome, reported that she saw the students through the window as the girl was performing a sex act on the boy. It's noteworthy that McCoy had been cautioned one month prior to the incident about the 15-year-old girl needing "visual supervision" at all times. It appears that she has a reputation for wanton friskiness around boys and she must be kept in sight continuously.
An investigation was launched by the Florida Department of Children and Families into allegations of child abuse, with the finding that McCoy was providing inadequate supervision at the time of the incident.McCoy was suspended with pay in January. At a special Lee County School Board meeting this coming Tuesday, Superintendent James Browder is recommending McCoy for suspension without pay. It's expected that a hearing before a judge will be requested by McCoy.
The district is formally charging him with inadequate supervision resulting in inappropriate behavior between two students; failing to uphold the primary concern of an educator, which should be the development of a student’s potential; sustaining the highest degree of ethical conduct; and failing to make a reasonable effort to protect students from conditions harmful to learning.
