Kansas Teacher Arrested for Alleged Abuse

(Wichita, Kansas) A 30-year-old special needs teacher formerly at Partridge Elementary School in Reno County, Amanda N. Caley, was arrested this week for allegedly abusing an 11-year-old female student.
Authorities suspect the abuse occurred between October 2008 and Jan. 12, and "culminated on Jan. 12 with injuries" to the girl, which were rug burns on her back, said Reno County District Attorney Keith Schroeder. He could not elaborate on how the injuries allegedly occurred.

"The rug burns required medical treatment - they were that ugly," Schroeder said Thursday.

The girl was seen by the school nurse, then treated by a doctor, Schroeder said.

The allegations were reported that day, said Reno County Sheriff's Capt. Steve Lutz, though he could not say who made the report.

The state's complaint, filed Sept. 4, charges that Caley "intentionally inflicted cruel and inhuman corporal punishment" upon the child.

Along with the child abuse charge, the state filed two alternative counts of aggravated endangerment of a child, alleging Caley caused the child to be placed in a situation in which she was injured or endangered Jan. 12.
Caley was booked into custody and released on a recognizance bond.
