Corruption Alleged in BC Health Care System

(Victoria, British Columbia) Charges of fraud and breach of trust in a $222-million electronic records program contracts have been filed against high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Health and the Fraser Health Authority. One doctor faces similar charges.
The charges are significant not only because they are against former high-ranking health officials, but also because they are directly related to B.C.’s high-profile push toward electronic health records, something the government plans to have in place by March 2013.

The charges include four counts — three fraud and one breach of trust — against Ron Danderfer, a former assistant deputy minister of health who helped award millions in contracts for the electronic health initiative. [...]

The charges also include three counts of fraud and one of breach of trust against James Roy Taylor, a former manager with the Fraser Health Authority who administered an annual budget of $9 million. [...]

Dr. Jonathan Burns, a health contractor and doctor who billed large amounts in relation to the electronic health program, also faces eight counts — six fraud and two breach of trust.
British Columbia has been plagued with problems in the electronic health records program.
