(Halifax, Nova Scotia) In November 2009, Madeline Selma Gosselin was accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl. She was charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.
In August 2010, Gosselin pleaded guilty and this week she was sentenced by Judge Ted Tax to 90 days in jail.
Court was told that Gosselin was 23 and living in Newfoundland and Labrador when she began chatting online with the complainant, a 14-year-old from the Dartmouth area, in May 2009.Apparently, the victim has been psychologically traumatized by the relationship and needs counseling.
The girl lied to Gosselin about her age at the start, saying she was "16 going on 17, Crown attorney Perry Borden said.
Gosselin learned the girl was only 14 but continued to communicate with her, the prosecutor said. The woman moved to the Halifax area and the relationship became sexual after the girl turned 15 in June 2009.
They continued to get together until that September, when the girl told a guidance counsellor about the relationship.
In addition to 90 days in jail, Gosselin will be on probation for 18 months.
