The device will be sent to France's Bureau of Investigation and Analysis (BEA) in Paris.
The device was expected to arrive at BEA offices within eight to 10 days, to allow for the search of the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CFR), so both can be taken back to France.
The relatives of the 228 crash victims continue to wait. Nevertheless, a spokesman said they were heartened by the news.

[Previous 4/4/11 post]
(Paris, France) In 2009, Air France Flight 447 took off from Rio de Janeiro bound for Paris only to disappear from radio and radar contact several hours later. The Airbus 330-200 had 228 people onboard, 216 passengers and 12 crew including three pilots.

The last reported location of Flight 447 was in the vicinity of the island of Fernando de Noronha off the northeast coast of Brazil. Search and rescue operations commenced immediately.

After weeks of search, 50 bodies and hundreds of pieces of wreckage were found but no "black boxes". To date, no cause of the disappearance has been identified.

However, after repeated search attempts, wreckage has been found on the Atlantic Ocean floor, at a depth of more than 13,000 feet. Special robots will now be used to find the cockpit voice and flight data recorders.

Meanwhile, French investigators have promised to soon release the results of analyses of Flight 447 wreckage recovered thus far.
