(Netherlands) While diverting police officers from normal front-line law enforcement duties, the Dutch are planning to launch a 500-officer strong animal welfare police force.
The decision to set up the animal welfare unit, derisively known as the "guinea pig police" and planned to be 500-strong, comes as the government makes austerity cuts to the number of officers carrying out street patrols.[…]A fast-response tactical enforcement team for animal abuse emergencies, eh? Seems to me that the Dutch may want to revisit the appropriateness of their lax drug laws.
The unit will be ordinary police officers who will be retrained to respond rapidly to emergency calls reporting animal abuse.
