Ecuadorean Satellite Scuttled
(Quito, Ecuador) Last April, Ecuador’s EXA space agency launched the nation's first satellite, a 4.6 pound device. Starting on May 16, the satellite, Pegaso NEE-001, transmitted overhead video of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.
On May 23, debris from a Russian rocket, launched almost three decades ago, side-swiped the Ecuadorean satellite and
all transmissions ceased.
Since May, efforts to restore functionality have failed and have been abandoned. Fortunately, Pegaso NEE-001 was insured.
