He certainly displays attitude in the pic. He appears to have attacked police and you can see that he is a big guy. Police may have had no choice but to shoot him in self defense. If there were shots in the back, however, the police story falls apart

No, not necessarily. Shots in the back, if they are the last shots, are reasonable. If you are in fight or flight, and have shot a serious threat to your life, adrenalin can keep those rounds going. Even jackasses might repel from their termination, turning their back in the process.
If I am forced to shoot someone, I am not going to stop until they are down. I will tell them to go down, but I will keep shooting until they obey or fall. I believe that is exactly the model officers are trained using as well. Business.
