A report from Poland announced the death of Antoni Dobrowolski, the oldest known survivor of the Auschwitz extermination camp. Antoni Dobrowolski was 108.
Dobrowolski, a primary school teacher, ran secret classes during Nazi Germany's occupation of Poland, when anything beyond four years of elementary education was prohibited.More than one million people died in Auschwitz.
In 1942, Dobrowolski was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Auschwitz. He was later moved to the concentration camps of Gross-Rosen and then Sachsenhausen, where he was liberated by the Soviet Army in the spring of 1945 as the war ended.
