Deadly Shooting on Ohio Turnpike (UPDATED)

(North Royalton, Ohio) According to police, Dr. Gulam Moonda, his wife and mother-in-law were traveling on the Ohio Turnpike toward Toledo when they pulled over in the emergency parking area in North Royalton to switch drivers. That’s when a man in a black mini van pulled in behind them, got out with a gun, and shot Doctor Moonda after taking his wallet. The gunman is described as a black male, about 5' 6" tall, driving a black mini van.

Although there was a theft, there's no explanation for why there was a killing. It seems like a random, faceless and totally unnecessary murder.

Scary.

[Update 5/20/05] There is new information in the case of Dr. Moonda's death. His wife, Donna Moonda, has been found to have a criminal record.

Donna Moonda

According to this report, court documents indicate that Donna Moonda pleaded no contest to a charge of acquiring a controlled substance by fraud. Apparently, on two occasions within the past three years, she has been fired from jobs (at Sharon Medical Center and at Greenville Hospital) as a nurse anesthetist for stealing Fentanyl. Fentanyl produces the same biological effects as heroin, except it's much stronger. Donna Moonda told investigators that she has a problem.

Undoubtedly, and I cannot help but wonder if her drug addiction ties in with her husband's murder. Stranger things have happened.

Oddly, the news of her drug involvement comes right on the heels of her appearance on local television to plead for help in finding her husband's murderer. It's been mentioned that she seemed somewhat disingenuous on camera. All in all, Donna Moonda is gathering a cloud of suspicion around her.

[Update 07/26/06]

Case solved.

[Update 07/06/07]

Donna Moonda convicted of murder.

[Update 09/21/07]

Moonda gets life in prison.
