Maher Arar - Terrorist or Innocent Victim?

For being sent to Syria and reportedly tortured, Arab-Canadian Maher Arar will receive $12 million from the Canadian government. He also gets a formal apology and removal from the Canadian no-fly list.

Other countries, including the U.S., are not so forgiving and have not abandoned suspicion. Check out Right Truth for a clean run-through of the Arar case.

From my perspective, paying off suspected terrorism-linked individuals is as ludicrous as trying to negotiate with terrorists. Until Arar has been exonerated in a court of law, preferably a military tribunal, he's a suspect, not a victim. Originally, Arar became a suspect due to his association with Abdullah Almalki, a target of an anti-terror investigation called Project A-O Canada. It's noteworthy that Almalki is still being investigated.

Even Canadian citizens are skeptical about paying off Arar. In a poll, almost half of the respondents believe the Canadian government is paying Arar protection money to preclude acts of terror in Canada.

Heh.
