Teacher Convicted of Child Abuse
(Sanford, Florida) A 50-year-old teacher of disabled children for Seminole Public Schools, Kathleen Garrett, has been convicted of child abuse.
Garrett originally faced multiple charges of abusing autistic children, however, most were contended away. Nonetheless, a jury deliberated for two hours on Friday before finding her guilty of one count of child abuse. Garrett was found to be physically heavy-handed with the disabled boys and girls, occasionally causing injury.
Notably, Garrett rejected a plea deal two weeks ago which carried only five years probation and loss of teaching certification. With the conviction, she faces a possible five-year prison term. Sentencing is scheduled for March 7th.
[Update 03/27/07]
Garrett sentenced.
