(Columbus, Ohio) It appears that some officers exercise on-the-spot plea deals with alleged offenders.
Two Columbus police officers were fired yesterday for misconduct, after authorities say they asked a 22-year-old woman to bare her breasts during a traffic stop. So, it works out that the woman, an Ohio State coed named Stephanie Baker, was willing to trade flashing her breasts for a pass on a traffic ticket.
In firing both Officer Scott Shepard and Officer Donny Smith, city Safety Director Mitchell J. Brown "went above and beyond" the recommendation of Chief James G. Jackson, Police Division spokeswoman Amanda Ford said.
Jackson had recommended that only Shepard be fired in connection with the March 11 traffic stop in the Arena District. Jackson said Smith should serve a 30-day suspension.
The officers were accused of coercing the woman into showing them her breasts to keep her boyfriend from getting arrested on an outstanding traffic warrant.
Baker admitted that she was "freaked out" over the possibility of going to jail, so she offered the two officers money, the station reported. Then she complained.
The officers declined the cash, but Baker said Smith then showed her a cell phone photo of a woman exposing her breasts. Baker claims she asked the officers if they wanted her to flash them, and Smith allegedly said, "Well, yeah. I think that's a totally fair deal."
Baker said she did show the officers her breasts before returning to her car.
Heh, if it were legal, I think a lot of people would make that trade.
