Rapist Wanted Comfortable British Prison

Here's an odd case. A man allegedly commits a crime deliberately to get into a "luxurious" British prison.

(Leeds, England) A 35-year-old Romanian immigrant, Ali Majlat, has been sentenced by Leeds Crown Court Judge Alistair McCallum to an indeterminate prison sentence with no parole for at least four and one-half years for raping a 21-year-old woman in a subway.

Majlat had reportedly been inspired to commit his crime because his incarcerated brother Dominic had told him of "easy and comfortable conditions" in British prisons.

Apparently, Majlat had grown up in an orphanage and spent time in communist-era Romanian prisons so he was acclimated to being locked up. With that mindset and lacking any skills other than crime, Majlat decided to live his life in Britain, committing crimes until he got caught.
But in a blow to his hopes of enjoying open-ended British hospitality at taxpayers' expense, a judge ordered his deportation back to Romania on his eventual release.

'This was a woman who was deliberately raped so that he could get accommodation in prison,' said Judge Alistair McCallum at Leeds Crown Court.

'It doesn't get much worse than that.'
Interestingly, right after he arrived in Britain Majlat was convicted of burglary and spent eight weeks in jail. Subsequently, he was released and instead of being deported, the British authorities just let him loose into the abyss of British society. Heh. Sounds like something we Americans do all the time.
