Rare Megamouth Shark Caught

(Donsol, Philippines) On the far southern coast of Luzon Island, Donsol is a popular tourist resort offering beaches, skin and scuba diving and swimming with whale sharks. Donsol lies about 300 miles by air south of Manila.

Off the coast of Donsol, fishermen recently caught one of the world's most elusive and rarest sharks, the megamouth, while fishing for mackerel. The 12-foot, 1,000-pound fish is only the 41st megamouth shark ever seen.

Notably, the megamouth shark was unknown to scientists until the first one was caught off Hawaii in 1976.

After catching the megamouth and before scientists arrived, the fisherman ate it. It was delightfully sautéed in coconut milk.
