Probation in Idaho Babysitter Sex Case - Updated

(Post Falls, Idaho) Twenty-nine-year-old babysitter Summer Kelli Ashle Hughes (formerly Nelson) avoided a trial by accepting a plea deal on Thursday.

Kootenai County prosecutors had planned on taking Hughes to trial on felony charges but her 14-year-old victim testified inconsistently at a May preliminary hearing, casting doubt on the strength of the prosecution's case. The boy claimed he had sex with Hughes during a period when she wasn't in the state.

As a result, the prosecution sought an agreement on lesser charges and Hughes was able to enter an Alford plea to four misdemeanor counts of injury to a child.
Hughes denied improper contact with the boy before entering the Alford plea, which means she does not admit guilt but acknowledges she could be found guilty if she went to trial.

“I am tired of going to court,” Hughes said. “I want to put this behind me.”
Consequently, Kootenai County 1st District Judge John Mitchell sentenced Hughes to two years of supervised probation and payment of a $500 fine. She will not be required to register as a sex offender.

Idaho Babysitter Accused of Sex with Boy
[Previous 7/7/09 post]
(Post Falls, Idaho) A 28-year-old local babysitter, Summer Kelli Ashle Nelson, was arrested yesterday for allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy she was hired to baby sit. Nelson faces four counts of lewd conduct with a minor.

The arrest culminated a seven-month investigation.
“Apparently, Summer had stated to others how she was in love with the 14-year-old boy and that she could not understand how it was wrong for the two of them to be together,” Post Falls police Lt. Pat Knight said.
Nelson was booked into custody at the Kootenai County Jail with bail set at $50,000.
