What's the difference between the women below?

Smoking and ageing.  Both pix are of Glenda Jackson, a former filmstar, presently a Labour Party member of the House of Commons and a Thatcher hater.  No woman would smoke if she knew how many wrinkles it would earn her in later life.  Jackson is now in her mid 70s.
Florida Woman Accused of Drug, Child Abuse Charges

(Chipley, Florida) A 36-year-old local woman, Lisa Junod Smith, has been accused of drug and child abuse offenses.

Smith faces charges of possession and production of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and child abuse.
Police received information of possible drug activity being conducted in a home with a minor child present. Officers with the Chipley Police Department accompanied the Department of Children and Families to the residence at 844 8th Street.

Once they entered the home, police say the saw drug paraphernalia near the front door. The officer contacted members of the Washington County Drug Task Force, which consist of the Chipley Police and Washington County Sheriff's Office, and notified them of the discovery.
Smith was booked into custody at the Washington County Jail.
'Delicate Creatures' Illegally Straddle Motorcycles

Illegal Straddler

(Aceh Province, Indonesia)
Thirty-five women in Aceh’s city of Lhokseumawe have been let off with a warning after the Shariah police caught them straddling a motorcycle and not wearing appropriate Islamic dress.

The Shariah police were conducting a raid on the main roads of Lhokseumawe on Friday, to monitor the administration’s bylaw that prohibits female passengers from straddling motorcycles.[…]

Lhokseumawe mayor Suadi Yahya explained that the bylaw was expected to discourage women from wearing pants in public. He said that the bylaw was needed because he had seen people’s behavior and morals straying too far from Aceh’s Islamic cultural values.

“We want to save women from things that will cause them to violate Shariah law,” he said. “We wish to honor women with this ban, because they are delicate creatures.”
If a delicate creature is banned from straddling a motorcycle, she obviously can't drive one. Nor is it legal for a woman to ride a bicycle, I assume.

Utah Swim Coach Gets Jail in Sex Case - Update

(Ogden, Utah)
Jamie Jo Waite, 37, was sentenced by 2nd District Judge Scott Hadley to four concurrent prison sentences of one to 15 years for four separate charges of forcible sex abuse, a second-degree felony, but the prison time was suspended.

Instead, the judge ordered Waite to spend 210 days in jail and complete three years' probation.

He also ordered 60 hours of community service or a $603 fine, $500 in fees, completion of a "cognitive restructuring program" and any restitution to be determined within a year. The woman is also prohibited from having any contact with the victim or any other children under the age of 18.
"Cognitive restructuring program," eh? When I was a youngster, it meant corporal punishment, basically an ass-whipping. I don't know what it entails in today's world.

Utah Swim Coach Guilty of Sex with Student - Update
[Previous 3/31/13 post]
(Ogden, Utah) Former Ben Lomond High School swim coach Jamie Waite, 37, was found guilty by a jury of engaging in sex with a student.

Waite was convicted on four counts of forcible sexual abuse.
Waite will be sentenced on four counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony, for illicit contact with the young swimmer from November 2010 through January 2011. She was the assistant swim coach at Ben Lomond at the time, a volunteer position. Each count carries a possible prison term of one to 15 years.

The forcible sexual abuse statute doesn’t have language explicitly covering intercourse. It does include wording regarding “taking indecent liberties” which can include statutory rape, officials explained, wherein a minor victim, although a willing participant, legally cannot give consent to sexual relations.

The victim had tried out for the swimming team as a sophomore, where he met Waite, whose assignment was working with beginning swimmers. The affair came his senior year.
Sentencing is scheduled for April 2.

(Ogden, Utah) A 35-year-old volunteer swimming coach at Ben Lomond High School, Jamie Waite, has been accused of engaging in sex with a 17-year-old male student at her home.

Waite faces possible charges of rape of a minor and sodomy of a minor.
The alleged victim was a 17-year-old male swimmer, a high school senior, who investigators believe had a relationship with Waite from November until late February when he called it off, reportedly saying he did not feel good about the activities taking place, said Ogden Police Lt. Scott Conley.
Waite was booked into custody at the Weber County Jail.
NY Town Removes Veterans’ Gadsden Flag For Being an offensive Tea Party Symbol‏

So is there something illegitimate about the Tea Party?  What is wrong with calling for lower taxes?  Was not American independence the result of a tax protest?

The United Veterans Memorial & Patriotic Association is fighting a New York town for the right to fly the Gadsden flag bearing the phrase, “Don’t Tread On Me.”  The veterans group had flown the flag, used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps since 1775, at the New Rochelle Armory, but the city council claimed it was an offensive Tea Party symbol and voted to have the flag removed.

According to the website Talk of the Sound, one council member compared the Gadsden to the gay pride flag while another member likened it to Nazi and, more oddly, Mickey Mouse flags.

The Thomas More Law Center is now representing the veterans group, claiming that if one were to use the city council’s logic, even the Stars and Stripes would be removed from flagpoles around the country.

“Using the City Council’s reasoning, they would remove the Stars and Stripes from flagpoles because both Democrat and Republican Parties, as well as most political candidates, use the Stars and Stripes in their campaign messaging,” said Richard Thompson, president of the center.

Enduring Horsebeef Sales

Over 100 German food retailers have been buying horsemeat falsely labelled as beef from a Dutch abattoir before selling it on to the public, Germany's Consumer Ministry confirmed on Thursday.

State authorities are trying to get all of the products off the shelves while carrying out a full investigation.

The Netherlands-based slaughter house has sold 50,000 tonnes of horse labelled as beef for at least two years, Dutch food standards officials said on Wednesday.
At least 124 meat sellers are implicated.

(Utica, New York) A 33-year-old Special Education teacher at Columbus Elementary School, Crystal DeRosa, has been accused of stealing a piece of jewelry from a five-year-old student.

DeRosa has been charged with fourth-degree grand larceny.
She [was] arrested Thursday, after what the Utica City School District called "a lengthy investigation" involving the school district, Utica Police and the Oneida County District Attorney's Office.

The school district said that DeRosa will face suspension when she is arraigned.
Details on booking and bond are unavailable. In any event, I suspect there is more to this story. What could possibly motivate someone to jeopardize her good-paying job for a piece of jewelry worn by a child? Makes no sense.
Hacking Airplane Navigation Systems

(Amsterdam, The Netherlands) This report is ominous.
A presentation at the Hack In The Box security summit in Amsterdam has demonstrated that it's possible to take control of aircraft flight systems and communications using an Android smartphone and some specialized attack code.

Hugo Teso, a security researcher at N.Runs and a commercial airline pilot, spent three years developing the code, buying second-hand commercial flight system software and hardware online and finding vulnerabilities within it. His presentation will cause a few sleepless nights among those with an interest in aircraft security.
Industry insiders dispute the dangers but allow that hackers may be able to cause cockpit lights to blink and pressurized air masks to drop.

Nevertheless, potential hacking of airplane controls is a nettlesome concern.

The victim at that time, Valley Fixtures Installers, had hired Pedersen as a Book Keeper from October 2011 to October 2012.

During the course of that investigation, another complaint of embezzlement was filed with the Sheriff’s Office… Same MO, same suspect, new victim – Madera Tractor & Implement.

Warmer summers now?  An amusing bit of cherrypicking

Anybody wondering why they went back only 600 years for comparisons?  Easy-peasy:  They avoid the Medieval Warm Period that way.  There's no such thing as an honest Warmist.  There probably was once but not in the present era of climate stasis

SUMMERS in the northern hemisphere are now warmer than at any period in six centuries, according to climate research published in the science journal Nature.

Harvard University researchers analysing evidence from Arctic tree rings, ice cores, lake sediments and thermometer records said recent warm temperature extremes in high northern latitudes "are unprecedented in the past 600 years" both for magnitude and frequency.

"The summers of 2005, 2007, 2010 and 2011 were warmer than those of all prior years back to 1400," they reported in the journal published on Wednesday.

"The summer of 2010 was the warmest in the previous 600 years in western Russia and probably the warmest in western Greenland and the Canadian Arctic as well," they said.

"These and other recent extremes greatly exceed those expected from a stationary climate."

New York Woman Accused in Cancer Scam

Brittany Ozarowski

(Suffolk County, New York) A 21-year-old Long Island woman, Brittany Ozarowski, has been accused of multiple offenses for allegedly faking cancer to acquire donations from the public to support her heroin addiction.
Ozarowski, 21, claimed to have ovarian, stomach, bone and brain cancer and solicited tens of thousands of dollars from people for more than a year to help pay for medical expenses, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said.

But Spota said it was nothing more than just “a despicable scam.”

“There was no cancer, no chemotherapy, no radiation and no medical bills,” Spota said. “There was just heroin.”

Under the heading “Help Save My Life,” prosecutors said she posted pictures of herself sitting in a wheelchair on a website saying she had “few options left.”[…]

The 24-count grand jury indictment was unsealed Wednesday evening. Ozarowski is scheduled to be arraigned on grand larceny, forgery and scheme to defraud charges Thursday morning.
Ozarowski was booked into custody with bail set at $5,000.

French Breast Study

(Besançon, France)
The results of a mammoth 15-year study led by professor Jean-Denis Rouillon, from the University of Besançon in eastern France, are finally in and it looks like conventional wisdom about bras and back pain has been way off the mark.

According to Rouillon, a sports science expert, the lesson to be learned from the preliminary results of his marathon experiment is that “bras are a false necessity”.

“Medically, physiologically, anatomically – breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity. On the contrary, they get saggier with a bra,” Professor Rouillon told France Info radio on Wednesday.

Using a slide rule and caliper, Rouillon spent years carefully measuring changes in the orientation of breasts belonging to 130 women, at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (University Hospital) in Besançon.
Frankly, I suggest the study produced an unremarkable result after 15 years of female breast measurements. Of course, that doesn't mean it shouldn't be done.

Another result of the study, curiously unreported, is the determination that Professor Jean-Denis Rouillon has the softest hands.

Chinese Demand Foreign Baby Milk

(London, England)
Chinese families are scouring the globe for powdered baby milk, creating shortages as far afield as the U.K. after a series of food scares damaged confidence in local supplies.

Major supermarkets in the U.K. including market leaders Tesco (TESO)and Sainsbury's have begun restricting the purchase of baby milk in an effort to prevent private exports to China.[…]

China's demand for foreign-produced formula has been growing ever since 2008 when melamine-tainted baby milk led to the death of six children and caused hundreds of thousands of other children to fall ill.
Reportedly, Chinese agents are working all corners of the globe to meet home-country demand.

Arizona Teacher Gets Prison for Sexual Misconduct - Update

(Tucson, Arizona) In February 2013, former Ironwood Ridge High School art teacher Melissa Ann Dalton, 34, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual conduct with a minor and two counts of attempted sexual conduct with a minor.

Yesterday, Dalton was sentenced in Pima County Superior Court to three years in prison and eight years' probation. She was also ordered to register as a sex offender.
Deputy Pima County Attorney Victoria Otto asked Judge Christopher Browning for the maximum prison sentence possible because of the impact Dalton's actions had on the victims.

Defense attorney Michael Piccarreta asked the judge to sentence Dalton to the minimum of two years in prison because she took responsibility for her actions, is remorseful, has sought therapy and has support from family and friends, several of whom were present at the sentencing hearing.
During the proceeding, Dalton sobbed out apologies.

How it should be

Americans who have been put through the wringer by the TSA when they travel by air might like to reflect on the following report from a New Zealand mother (and her husband) arriving home after a trip overseas with her 2-year old daughter (Hannah) in her arms.
We landed home in Queenstown to a cold but sunny day with Daylight Saving on its last day.  Having Hannah in our arms always gets us through customs quickly as security sends us through the express line and we were greeted by customs with a smile, after reading our arrival card she said "welcome home".

Wouldn't we all like to be treated like that by officials?  I think it is arguable that New Zealand is the last outpost of civilization.  Maybe there's some remnant of it in small-town America.  My favorite New Zealand story is here.

Colorado Teacher Gets No Jail for Sex with Student - Update

(Englewood, Colorado) Former Englewood High School teacher Alexandra Elizabeth McLean, 28, has pleaded guilty to reduced charges and was sentenced to no jail.

McLean was originally charged with two Class 3 felony counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of authority. In accordance with a plea agreement, McLean pleaded guilty to misdemeanor sexual assault and misdemeanor official misconduct.

18th Judicial District Judge Marilyn Antrim sentenced McLean to two years deferred judgment on the sexual assault charge, in anticipation of dismissal, and two years probation for official misconduct.

Presumably, the no-jail sentence resulted because "McLean had been extremely truthful and remorseful" and an evaluation determined that no psychosexual treatment was necessary.

McLean was ordered to register as a sex offender.

Man Sexually Assaulted by 4 Women

(Toronto, Canada) Local police are searching for four females who are believed to have sexually assaulted a 19-year-old male during the early morning hours of March 31. The women reportedly offered to drive the man home but took him to a parking lot and, one by one, sexually assaulted him.

Toronto Police issued a statement:
“The complainant was instead driven to a parking lot in the area of Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue where he was sexually assaulted by all four suspects,” said the statement.

After the suspects let go of the man, they were seen leaving the area in a vehicle that resembled a silver Honda SUV.

Police say the four female suspects are all white, in their thirties, and approximately 5’4” and 200 pounds. The women were wearing short black dresses with high heels and no nylons. The SUV driver had a British accent with short blond hair and a tattoo of wings on the back of her neck. Another woman had longer, dark hair with red dye at the bottom.
Eight hundred pounds of intimacy in short black dresses! It conjures up images of pounding and sweaty beef flabberonies, compacted like fire hydrants.

Arkansas Woman Accused of Sex Assault of Boy, 16

(Fayetteville, Arkansas) A 40-year-old Springdale woman, Adrienne Wright, has been accused of sexually abusing a 16-year-old male patient at a health care facility.

Wright faces a charge of second-degree sexual assault.
The police had interviewed a 16-year-old boy, identified as “JK” at the Children Safety Center on Feb. 15 during which the boy alleged that an employee at a health facility had sexually assaulted him, the affidavit said.

The name of the health facility was redacted, but the affidavit said the boy was a live-in patient at the facility between Sept. 7 and Dec. 20 of last year. The affidavit said the boy was being treated for “anger issues.”

The boy told officers a female employee he knew as “Ms. A” had a sexual relationship with him that started a couple weeks after he entered the facility, the report said. The boy later identified Wright in a photo line-up, the report said.

The incidents happened at night and out of sight of security cameras, the boy told officers, and consisted of “hand jobs” and at least one instance of her performing oral sex on him, the report said.
Wright was booked into custody at the Washington County Detention Center with bond set at $15,000.
A brief on the canard that Warmists are more credible because they have out-published skeptics

Warmist Greg Laden offers this graphic to marginalize confidence in climate skeptics:

[The author of the graphic can't even spell "consensus".  The URL for the graphic names it as "global warming concensus".  Warmists are not the best of minds -- JR]

Without quibbling about precise numbers, why has comparatively little research been published by skeptics?

1. No government funding. With few exceptions (Spencer and Christy come to mind), the federal government (the overwhelmingly largest funder of climate research) doesn’t fund skeptics. But it has funded warmism to the tune of tens of billions of dollars since at least the Clinton administration. Without money and access to expensive data and instruments, original climate research is nearly impossible.

2. Journal bias. Many (most? virtually all?) relevant journals refuse to publish skeptics — even letters to the editor. Indeed the publishers of these journals (like the NAS, AAAS and Nature publishing) are highly partisan when it comes to climate research.

3. Warmist-enforced journal bias. As discussed here, journals are policed by warmists such as Michael Mann to make sure that skeptics aren’t published. Those that dare to publish skeptics are targeted and punished.

4.Being a skeptic is a career damaging. If you want to end your career as a climate researcher, announce your skepticism. This is most likely the case because of #1. If the only significant funder of climate research favors warmism, then that’s what you do (or at least your institution will, with or without you). Consider how Penn State was willing to degrade itself to keep its cash cow (Michael Mann).

Why doesn’t it matter that skeptics have published many fewer papers?

Just like you don’t need to be Steven Spielberg to figure out whether a movie is any good, you don’t need to be a professional climate researcher to figure out that, say, the hockey stick is hokey. As long as science is not a black box (which is what Mann’s hokey stick was until McIntyre and McKitrick began their work), it can be evaluated.

Stacey Fuchs

(Lakeland, Florida)
A woman who read on the Internet that she had the right to move into a home that is under foreclosure learned the Sheriff's Office disagrees.

Stacey Ann Fuchs was arrested Tuesday and charged with grand theft of the house.

Deputies arrested Fuchs, 31, of Lakeland, after she changed the locks and moved into a South Lakeland home worth about $150,000 without the knowledge or permission from the woman who had surrendered it or the lender.

"You just can't move into someone else's legally owned property. That's trespassing, burglary, and theft," Sheriff Grady Judd said in a news release. "There is no such thing as a free lunch, and we are going to arrest people who try this scam to steal homes in Polk County."
It's called "adverse possession" and Fuchs saw it on the Internet, so in her mind it must be true. The authorities did not concur.

Fuchs was booked into custody at the Polk County Jail on charges of grand theft and burglary.
The Progressive Bible

Since I have absolutely no authority to amend or alter the Word of God, who better than me to follow in the equally unqualified and arrogant footsteps of the secularists and do so anyway. True, I could be risking Hell by doing so, but Rob Bell has convinced me Hell doesn’t exist so I’m good to go. After all, if you can’t rely on a wannabe shaman peddling postmodernism in hipster glasses who can you trust?

Thus, to make the Bible more contemporary, inclusive, and progressive, here are my top 10 verses that need to be “updated” for our enlightened age.

10. In the beginning the god of your understanding watched the “big bang” occur, and then stood idly by for billions of years curious to see how this whole evolution thing would turn out.

9. For we so love the state that we give it our only begotten offspring. Whosoever believes in the state will not perish but get an Obama-phone and cash for clunkers.

8. Thou shall steal when it’s your “right”, when someone is “rich,” or when you’re a victim of white privilege.

7. Therefore, whatever god you recognize gave you over to the pure desires of your loins, to hit it with any consenting adult and/or organic orifice that floats your boat.

6. And one day every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that god is whomever you need him/her/it to be.

5. Judge not lest ye believe in redistributing wealth, then judge much and judge harshly.

4. Do not murder, unless you’re going to be “punished with a baby.”

3. And Moses said to the theocratic authoritarian denying diversity in Egypt: “Let my people go into the wilderness so that they may recycle, commune with nature, and repent for their carbon footprint.”

2. Jesus’ mother came to him because the same-sex wedding party had run out of legalized marijuana. Jesus replied, “Maternal unit, why do you involve me? I am still buzzing from our last stash.” Jesus’ mother replied to the undocumented immigrants tending the wedding, “Do whatever he tells you.” So Jesus told them: “Puff, puff, pass man…puff, puff, pass.”

1. Jesus said, “I am a good moral teacher. Believe in what you will, for all roads lead to Heaven.”

It does appear that the Arctic ice has in recent years been undergoing one of its periodic shrinkages.  That such shrinkages are periodic and normal the image above shows rather vividly.  It is a photograph showing U.S. nuclear submarine "Skate" surfaced at the North Pole on 17 March, 1959  -- a time when the ice-pack is at its seasonal thickest for the year.  There was clearly very little ice-cap at all that year

When we note that the current shrinkage of Northern sea-ice has been accompanied by an EXPANSION of sea-ice at the SOUTH pole it becomes obvious that there is no global phenomenon involved  -- merely local changes.  That the article below claims a global effect is therefore a straight-out lie.  The scientists concerned can hardly be unaware of the Antarctic ice expansion so the lie is a deliberate one

National Snow and Ice Data Center graph

Another reason why it is a deliberate lie is that even Rajendra Pachauri and Jim Hansen now concede that there has been NO global warming for over 15 years.  And something that does not exist cannot cause ANYTHING, let alone "changes to the food chain".  Even a Humean account of causation makes that clear

Major changes to the food chain, weather and landscape of Antarctica have provided stark evidence of the impact of global warming, a report on a polar expedition has revealed.

The preliminary report on the research by scientists from the Australian Antarctic Division and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute near Boston suggest significant changes at the lowest level of the food chain, a vital source of sustenance for seabirds, seals and whales.

The Climate Commission recently said there was evidence natural events were being influenced by climate change as greenhouse gases accumulated and trapped measurable amounts of extra energy in the atmosphere and oceans.

The expedition senior scientist of the Australian Antarctic Division, Steve Nicol, said in 25 years of surveying Antarctica, this was the first time he had experienced rain.

The findings from the report are the focus of a new exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum.

Data from the expedition in 2010 is still being collated but a selection from the 20,000 images to be used for monitoring future change will go on show from Saturday in Elysium Antarctic Visual Epic.

"Warming is evident in the moistness of the air in this area of the world's driest continent. Rain is now not uncommon and whilst this may encourage plant life, it is probably detrimental to the health of many of the breeding birds," it found.

"This moistness also results in more snow falling and this too can affect the breeding habits of nesting birds when it falls during their incubation period, burying their eggs in the cold snow.

"The glaciers draining the ice caps of the islands and the mountains of the peninsula are shrinking, too. This has resulted in the formation of more icebergs and a greater run-off of freshwater."

Expedition leader Michael Aw said the team witnessed an increase in herbivores called salps, possibly at the expense of phytoplankton, which are consumed by fish and krill.

"The balance in the herbivore elements of the food chain determine the types of larger animals that can be supported," he said. "There are suggestions it is changing from one that supports krill and its predators [seabirds, seals, whales] to one that may result in more fish and possibly squid … The whales also feed on the krill so there is a chain reaction."

(Hemet, California) The 45-year-old assistant principal at Tahquitz High School, Erin Henton, has been accused of engaging in sexual jiggy-jiggy with three male students.

Henton faces counts of sexual battery, oral copulation, sending harmful/inappropriate matter via electronic device, and abnormal sexual interest in children.
Henton was placed on administrative leave in March. She was arrested at her home Wednesday.

Pennsylvania Teacher Allegedly Gave Beer to Students

(Delaware County, Pennsylvania) A 33-year-old teacher at Ridley High School, Katherine Leigh Preusser, has been accused of providing alcohol to two of her students after her car was pulled over with a student driving and police found open beer cans.

Preusser faces counts of corruption of minors, furnishing alcohol to minors, drug possession, and other related crimes.
The young driver said they had just seen "The Last Oz" at the nearby Granite Run Mall theater and he pulled over so Preusser could drive. The film's actual name is "Oz the Great and Powerful."

When Preusser got out of the car, police saw two open cans of beer next to her seat. She couldn't remember the name of the movie. She admitted the car was hers and she had been drinking the beer - both in the car and movie.

Police said a 17-year-old female student in the backseat had alcohol on her breath but claimed she had not been drinking. She said the movie was the "Last AW," according to police. She later told police she had been drinking.

Neo-Nazi Conference Canceled

(Coburg, Germany) The scheduled neo-Nazi National Democratic Party (NPD) conference for this weekend has been canceled.
The local council of Coburg, where the NPD had booked a venue, started construction work there early this week, covering the road leading to it with tonnes of soil.

An attempt by the NPD to force the work to stop and access to be afforded was rejected by an administrative court on Thursday.

The party was furious, with a spokesman saying the refusal was "absurd official caprice" and said the meeting would be postponed.
It's logical to surmise that the NPD is not very popular in Coburg.

French Government Scandal Called A Crisis

French Budget Minister Jérôme Cahuzac Disgraced

(Paris, France) How does one say "the government is having a cow" in French?
Former Budget Minister Jérôme Cahuzac's political life continued to crumble around him on Wednesday. A day after he was charged with with tax fraud the Socialist Party expelled him from their ranks and he was given a pasting by politicians and the press.

France's disgraced former Budget Minister Jérôme Cahuzac was expelled from the Socialist Party on Wednesday a day after he admitted lying about hiding away money from the tax man in a Swiss bank account.

It was the latest stage in the downfall of a man once tasked with cracking down on tax evasion, who now faces charges himself of "laundering the proceeds of tax fraud".

Socialist Party chief Harlem Desir announced on Wednesday morning that Cahuzac had been expelled.

It was another nail in the coffin of the political career of a man, who was considered a government heavyweight and key ally of François Hollande. It could get worse still for Cahuzac, who now faces a jail sentence and hefty fine if found guilty.
Interestingly, Cahuzac's actions have produced a curious outcome. Cahuzac was expelled from the Socialist Party for being a liar and money launderer, arguably desirable leadership attributes unheralded but often tied to socialist funtionaries (i.e. people on top get theirs while the citizenry sinks toward police-state poverty).

Given his bona fides, it would seem that the Socialist Party should continue to embrace Cahuzac. But, he got caught lying and laundering money.

Speculatively, I suggest Cahuzac was maybe a little too effective at cracking down on tax evaders and a few prominent Socialist Party toes were stepped on.

Is Leftism the politics of envy?

Because there are so many rich Leftists, I have long argued (see the sidebar here) that material envy is not now, if it ever was, the driver of Leftism.  Even Marx, Engels and the Russian Bolsheviks were middle class rather than working class.  They were not generally poor.  I have argued that hate of the world about them and the people in it are  the key factors behind Leftism.  And the people Leftists hate most are those who cheerfully get on with life, as conservatives do.  Much more here.

So it is interesting that an academic journal article has recently emerged that also discounts the role of envy.  I reproduce the journal abstract below.

It should be noted however that the sampling underlying the article is fairly ludicrous. Sophisticated internet users do not represent the population at large.  And the over-representation of Democrat voters in the sample confirms that.

Additionally, the possibility of getting honest answers about political questions from Leftists has to be discounted.  They know how dismal is their internal world so tend to misrepresent it. Pol Pot tells you how Leftists really think.  So the article is a straw in the wind rather than anything conclusive.
Envy, politics, and age

By Christine R. Harris and Nicole E. Henniger

In the last 5 years, the phrase “politics of envy” has appeared more than 621 times in English-language newspapers, generally in opinion essays contending that political liberalism reflects and exploits feelings of envy. Oddly, this assertion has not been tested empirically. We did so with a large adult sample (n = 357). Participants completed a Dispositional Envy Scale and questions about political ideology, socioeconomic status, and age. Envy and age were moderately correlated; younger people reported greater envy. Political ideology and envy were weakly correlated; however, this relationship was not significant when controlling for age.

Mexican Drug Violence

Tamaulipas, Mexico

(Mexico City)
Nine bodies, the majority of them dismembered, were found inside an SUV with Texas tags in Ciudad Victoria, the capital of the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, state officials said.

The grisly discovery was made Sunday night in the community of Santa Clara, the Tamaulipas Attorney General’s Office and the Public Safety Secretariat said in a joint statement.

The Gulf and Los Zetas drug cartels have been fighting for control of Tamaulipas and smuggling routes into the United States.

Police received a tip from a caller that the bodies were inside a GMC Yukon SUV, the state agencies said.

“The remains of nine unidentified males, the majority of them dismembered, were found inside the vehicle,” the AG’s office and the secretariat said.

The bodies were taken to the morgue, where specialists will try to identify them.
Note that 1,025 people died from drug-related violence in March 2013 and nearly 4,000 deaths have been recorded since the beginning of last December.

Ohio Teacher Accused of Drug Charges
[Previous 9/26/12 post]
(Toledo, Ohio) A 38-year-old Spanish teacher at Bedford High School, Sara Thierry, has been accused of multiple drug offenses.

Thierry faces counts of trafficking in drugs, illegal manufacturing of drugs, possession of drugs, and tampering with evidence.
Police allege that Mrs. Thierry had a role in the massive mushroom-growing operation that Toledo police busted while responding to a reported burglary in East Toledo on Sept. 16.

Police found the grow operation, though no one was in the house, and searched several other properties, all owned, in some part, by Mrs. Thierry's husband, Matthew Thierry, 41.[…]

Police have said they seized 137 pounds of mushrooms and valued the drugs at $3.1 million, but said the valuation could change once purity tests have been completed. Police believe that the mushroom seizure is the largest ever in the state.

In court documents, police allege that Mrs. Thierry had the drugs which were "prepared for shipment," assisted in the cultivation, and "did contact another by phone and ask that person to dispose of a thumb drive that was inserted into her husband Matthew Thierry's work laptop," the various charging documents state.
Mr. and Mrs. Thierry were booked into custody at the Lucas County Jail. Mrs. Thierry was released on $2,500 bond. Mr. Thierry is being held on $50,000 bond.
New York Times accused of sexism after obituary to brilliant rocket scientist leads with her cooking

Nice to see a liberal icon falling foul of its own rules

She was one of the first female rocket scientists in the U.S. but the New York Times decided to lead an obituary for Yvonne Brill with her penchant for cooking beef stroganoff and being 'the world's best mom'.

The obituary opened with the following: 'She made a mean beef stroganoff, followed her husband from job to job and took eight years off from work to raise three children.'

The Grey Lady met the ire of several high-profile scientists and scholars following the publication of the obituary which led to a plethora of angry reactions on websites like the Daily Beast and Jezebel.

Brill was awarded a National Medal of Technology and Innovation by President Barack Obama in 2011.  Writing for Jezebel, Doug Barry chided the newspaper for burying the quite obvious lead.

'Oh yes, by the way, Number One Mom Yvonne Brill, Preparer of Divine Beef Stroganoff, Cleaner of Messy Diapers, also invented a little system that helped make satellites work. It's nothing, really, just the industry standard.'

CNN Editor and Daily Beast Washington Bureau Chief Howard Kurtz also wrote a rebuke to the obituary. 'Would a male scientist have drawn such an obit opening about his great fatherhood skills? Obviously not.'

Shortly after the uproar, the obituary for Brill was altered with a new introduction that at least introduced her career as a rocket scientist.

The Chart from Hell

On August 7, 2009 Barack Obama thumped his chest in the Rose Garden and proclaimed "We've rescued our economy from catastrophe."  Supposedly, the economic recovery had officially begun two months earlier.

That was 1328 days ago.  But, try telling that to somebody that has to work for a living.  Median Household Income continues to fall.

While the President pretends that the end to life as we know it is near because of the incy wincy sequester cuts, families have been forced to live on less for years – and, it's still getting worse.

As reported by the New York Times:

"For the first time in over a year, median annual income fell by a statistically significant amount from the previous month, according to a report from Sentier Research.

Median annual household income in February 2013 was $51,404, about 1.1 percent (or $590) lower than the January 2013 level of $51,994. The numbers are all pretax, and are adjusted for both inflation and seasonal changes.

… The longer-run trends are even more depressing.

February’s median annual household income was 5.6 percent lower than it was in June 2009, the month the recovery technically began; 7.3 percent lower than in December 2007, when the most recent recession officially started; and 8.4 percent lower than in January 2000, the earliest date that this statistical series became available."

Note that these numbers are "pretax."  In January, the Payroll Tax was increased by 2 percent by Obama's $600 billion fiscal cliff tax hike.  On average, that tax increase will suck another $700 per year out of the wallets of 160 million Americans.

Little wonder that 6-in-10 Americans believe the economy is still in recession.  And, the really big hit from ObamaCare is right around the corner.

And, what do we get from the White House?  Denial.  Last month, Joe Biden said Americans are "no longer worried" about the economy.

Texas Woman Gets Prison in Sex Case

Charmaine Lloydette Beaver

(Wichita Falls, Texas) In August 2012, a 25-year-old local woman, Charmaine Lloydette Beaver, was arrested and charged with sexual assault for engaging in intimate relations with a 16-year-old girl.

Ms. Beaver pleaded guilty in October and was sentenced to probation and community supervision with the stipulation that she stay away from her victim. However, contrary to the legal mandate Beaver continued a relationship with her victim.

In December 2012, the victim's mother called authorities to complain about Beaver living with her and her daughter and not leaving. Community supervision and correction departments verified that Beaver was violating the terms of her probation.

Last month, Charmaine Lloydette Beaver, now 26, was sentenced to three years in prison for violating probation.
