Horse Rapist Walks Free
According to this story from the Netherlands, a man who raped horses was able to walk free because there is no specific law banning sexual intercourse with pets and livestock. Also, grounds were established that the horses had not physically suffered from the rapes. In response to complaints about the incident, Dutch Agriculture Minister Cees Veerman has proposed legislation to make all forms of bestiality illegal.
One would expect that the banning of bestiality in a civilized society would be based on ethical, moral, and medical reasons, however, in the Netherlands, this is not the case. The Dutch lawmakers believe sex with animals should be illegal because pets and livestock are unable to give or withhold their consent. Therefore, bestiality is nonconsensual sex.
As bizarre and troublesome as this story seems, it becomes more so when one considers that devices are being manufactured which allow people to communicate with their pets. A dog barking translator is already on the market and devices for other species are sure to follow. It's not inconceivable to imagine a person recording a conversation with his pretty French Poodle, Fifi, to provide evidence of consent to their sexual relations.
From an economic perspective, there also may be a noticeable increase in demand for doggie treats in the Netherlands.
