Ethanol Isn’t Green, Isn’t Efficient, and Shouldn’t Be Subsidized

My new Mercury outboard motor came with the following warning: “It is recommended that only alcohol-free gasoline be used where possible.” Gasoline blended with ethanol, an alcohol, does some nasty things to small motors. It corrodes metal, deteriorates plastic and rubber parts and creates difficulties with starting and operating the motors. Fuel lines have been known to leak, causing obvious dangers to operators. Where’s the Consumer Protection Agency when you need it? Not only won’t the government protect us consumers, it caused the problem.

Government legislation mandates the blending of ethanol into most gasoline sold in the United States and has set ever increasing amounts of ethanol to be phased in over time. This policy is an ill-advised attempt to reduce U.S. dependence on oil and to shift automotive fuel to a renewable source. Mandating the use of ethanol imposes more costs than benefits, including hidden costs on consumers that hit the poorest members of society worst, and provides billions of dollars in lucrative business to grateful campaign-donating special-interest groups. Making matters worse, supporters of ethanol make highly questionable claims about its environmental benefits. Ethanol’s got to go.

Ethanol can be made from various plant materials, but in the U.S. ethanol is made primarily from corn. In 2012/2013, approximately one-third of the U.S. corn crop went into ethanol production. U.S. annual production of ethanol has surged since 1998, increasing from slightly over one billion gallons to over 13 billion gallons in 2012. This surge in production and consumption is the result of state and federal mandates requiring it to be blending with gasoline.

The ethanol mandate has increased food prices, as the surge in demand from ethanol production has raised corn prices and corn profitability. Lands previously planted with other grain crops have been shifted into corn production, lowering supplies of other grains and raising their prices. Livestock that feed on higher-priced grains have had their costs of production and prices go up as well. These higher prices for food items are a “tax” on consumers—financial burdens that fall disproportionately on lower-income families whose budgets are heavily weighted towards food items. One nice benefit to politicians is that explicit agricultural crop subsidies have fallen as grain prices have gone up. In essence, the government has been able to legislatively shift the burden of the agricultural subsidy programs off the budget and onto consumers in the form of higher food prices.

The environmental benefits of corn-based ethanol are in doubt. While ethanol is an oxygenate that allows for the cleaner burning of gasoline, it comes with various other environmental costs. The environmental costs to manufacture and distribute ethanol are usually neglected by its proponents; increased grain output requires the use of more fertilizers, insecticides and ground water. Agricultural water runoff also imposes environmental costs, as does the diesel and gasoline farm machinery requires to grow corn. Ethanol is costly to transport since it is unsuitable for most pipelines, requiring other types of ground transportation that use fossil fuels as well. Drivers using gasoline blended with ethanol find their cars’ miles-per-gallon fall, so more gallons of blended gasoline are needed for traveling any given distance. All told, the environmental costs from using corn-based ethanol may be higher than using straight gasoline.

Arizona Mom Accused of Murdering Daughter, 13

(Casa Grande, Arizona) A 35-year-old local mother, Connie Villa, has been accused of murdering her 13-year-old daughter and attempting to poison her other three children. She is also accused of stabbing her ex-husband.

Villa faces one count of first degree murder and four counts of attempted murder.
Aniarael Macias, 13, was found dead in the bathroom of her family's home in Casa Grande last Wednesday, according to police.

Authorities were called to a home at the Colony Apartments in Casa Grande, Ariz. on Wednesday night, Dec. 25 after the woman's ex-husband, Adam Villa, 33, called police and said that he had been stabbed by his ex-wife.
Details on booking are unavailable.

The Smell of Animal Rights

(San Diego, California)
An apparently horrific sea lion stench, caused by waste from the sea lions at La Jolla Cove in San Diego, is causing a lot of inconvenience to local residents and businesses.

The stench is reportedly so bad that a number of businesses in the area are suing the city for not acting to find an enduring solution to the problem.

The issue of the sea lion stench raises serious questions about the balance between animal rights and the welfare of humans. The situation is complex as the animals are protected, to a degree, by federal and state laws.

Local residents and merchants say the stench from the sea lions, as well as from birds, is so bad that it is affecting business and poses a health risk.

Many people have had enough of the smell and have decided to take action. Last week the Citizens for Odor Nuisance Abatement (yes – there is such an organization) filed suit in the San Diego Court.
Visitors to La Jolla Cove are encouraged to hold their noses.

Female Marine Physical Standard

(Parris Island, South Carolina)
Starting Jan. 1, every woman in the Marines Corps was supposed to meet a new physical standard by performing three pullups. But that has been put off.

The Marine Corps announced it quietly. There was no news conference — just a notice on its social media sites and an item on its own TV show, The Corps Report.

Lance Cpl. Ally Beiswanger explained that the pullup test had been put off until sometime next year, to gather more data and "ensure all female Marines are given the best opportunity to succeed."

So far, female Marines are not succeeding. Fifty-five percent of female recruits tested at the end of boot camp were doing fewer than three pullups; only 1 percent of male recruits failed the test.

The three pullups is already the minimum required for all male Marines.
Heh.

A counterblast to "authoritarianism"

BOOK REVIEW of "Dehumanizing Christians: Cultural Competition in a Multicultural World" by George Yancey

My reaction to this careful and thorough book was a good chuckle.  Yancey has in effect caught the political left with their pants down.  Leftist pretensions of tolerance and good will rapidly fall by the wayside when they are dealing with conservative Christians.  We know that from the outpouring of hate speech towards Christians we regularly see in the media.  Yancey verifies that by way of careful survey research.  Progressives seem to have more fear and loathing towards Christians than Christians have fear and loathing towards the Devil!

Yancey is primarily interested in the concept of authoritarianism so he looks at how people want to treat members of other groups.  Do they want to use force to suppress members of groups that they disagree with?  Given the way progressives froth at the mouth about Christians, one would expect that all sorts of suppressive  actions towards Christians would be supported by progressives.  And they are. The old Voltairian attitude "I disagree with what you say but I will fight to the death for your right to say it" is conspicuously absent.  It is clear that, given their way, progressives would treat Christians as harshly as Stalin did the kulaks.

No observer of history should be surprised by any of that.  From the French revolution on,  the political left has always striven to gain control over other people and impose on other people what the Leftist thinks is a good thing.  Obamacare, for instance,  imposes a vast regulatory and bureaucratic apparatus on American healthcare that will undoubtedly  reduce services and increase costs but "It's for your own good" we are told.  Or for the good of somebody anyway.

Where Yancey innovates is that he has highlighted Leftist hate by using the conventional methods of psychological research.  Psychologists such as Altemeyer use questionnaire surveys to "prove" that conservatives are a bad lot.  Yancey returns the compliment by using the same methods to show that progressives are a bad lot.  After 20 years of doing such research myself, I don't think it proves much either way but Yancey's demonstration that it can just as easily be used to shoot down progressives is at least amusing.

Given that it undermines almost the whole of what has so far passed as political psychology, there are real grounds for expecting that the Left will try to suppress this book.  Chris Brand's book on IQ was withdrawn even after distribution had started.  The only thing that might save the book is that Yancey is black.  Suppressing a book by a black would definitely cause some grinding of gears in "progressive" heads.  In their terms it would be "racist".

I have linked above to the Amazon site for buying the book but if Amazon withdraw it, the book may still be available from the publishers here.  Prof. Yancey blogs occasionally here.  His personal page has some rather good harpsichord music playing on it.  A devotion to the harpsichord is a high-water mark of civilization in my opinion.

The amusing thing about the Leftist claim that conservatives are "authoritarian" is that it has always been a blatant case of projection (seeing your own faults in others).  Nothing could be more authoritarian than Communist regimes and all Leftism is authoritarian to its core. Whether by revolution or by legislation, Leftists aim to change what people can and must do. When in 2008 Obama said that he wanted to "fundamentally transform" America, he was not talking about America's geography or topography but rather about American people. He wanted them to stop doing things that they wanted to do and make them do things that they did not want to do. Can you get a better definition of authoritarianism than that?

Texas Woman Gets 28 Years Prison for Sex with Son, 3

(San Antonio, Texas)
A mother and former Army sergeant who pleaded guilty to a charge that she recorded herself having sex with her 3-year-old son was sentenced in federal court Friday to 28 years in prison.

Kimberly Epperson, 25, accepted a plea deal that set the range of punishment between 15 and 30 years in prison for one count of production of child pornography related to the videos and pictures she sent to former boyfriend Wade Allen Perkins, 26, also an Army sergeant whom she met while they were stationed at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.

Chief U.S. District Judge Fred Biery told Epperson moments before her sentencing Friday that her assaults on her son had effectively “sentenced him to life,” adding he would have 70 years or more to remember and relive the abuses.
Good riddance.

Kentucky Woman Accused of Sex with Boy

(Hancock County, Kentucky) A 27-year-old local woman, Tiffany D. Wilhite, has been accused of engaging in sex with a 15-year-old boy.

Wilhite faces seven counts of rape in the 3rd degree, 15 counts of sodomy in the 3rd degree, and 15 counts of unlawful transaction with a minor in the 1st degree (illegal sex act under 16 years of age).
Troopers say the mother of the victim alerted the Lewisport Police Department to the situation.

It's alleged that Tiffany D. Wilhite had inappropriate sexual relations with the victim, starting around May 2013, when he was 14-years-old.
Wilhite was booked into custody at the Breckinridge County Detention Center in Hardinsburg.

Carolina Woman Naked in the Neighborhood

(Rock Hill, South Carolina)
A Rock Hill woman whose aunt said she had been using crack cocaine throughout the day streaked across a neighborhood without her shirt and pants on Christmas Eve, knocking on stranger’s doors and yelling “nonsensical things,” police say.

At about 1 p.m. Tuesday, police were sent to a Hutchinson Street home after a woman, 57, reported that her niece, Angel Brock, 38, began taking her clothes off outside, according to a Rock Hill police report.

She told police that Brock had been “smoking crack all day and was running around yelling and taking her clothes off.”[…]

They found Brock banging on the screen door of a house. She was topless and her pants were falling down around her knees, the report states.
Brock pleaded guilty to a charge of public disorderly intoxication. She was sentenced to time served.

Risky Speech in Dubai

(Dubai, United Arab Emirates) Visitors to the UAE need to be aware of the penalties for criminal insults.
A director managed to have his one-month jail sentence scrapped and replaced by a Dh3,000 fine for swearing at an etisalat [telecom company] employee using the f-word.

The Dubai Appeal Court cancelled the imprisonment against the 43-year-old Canadian director and replaced it with the fine after contending that he told the Egyptian employee to f*** off and not f*** you.

The Dubai Misdemeanour Court had earlier convicted the Canadian of insulting the 29-year-old employee who claimed the defendant told him f*** you when the latter came to carry out a transaction at etisalat’s counter at Mirdif City Centre.

The appellate court reduced the imprisonment to a fine after the Canadian’s lawyer Uday Al Kazwini of Dar Al Balagh Advocates and Legal Consultants, argued that his client used a metaphorical expression when he said f*** off and not f*** you.
It's not clear how "bite me" and "get bent" would be viewed by the court, however, it's presumed that "up yours" would warrant jail time.

College Professor Fakes Research Results

(Ames, Iowa)
Iowa State University biomedical sciences assistant professor Dong-Pyou Han resigned after admitting he tainted blood samples to get desired outcomes in research animals. The National Institutes of Health had awarded Han’s research team $19 million in multiyear grants.

An assistant professor at Iowa State University received millions of federal dollars to pursue a promising AIDS vaccine — and then resigned for faking results, according to documents released this week.

Dong-Pyou Han, an assistant professor of biomedical sciences, resigned after owning up to tampering with rabbit blood to get desired outcomes in research animals, according to the Des Moines Register.
There's no word on what happened to the $19 million.

Ukrainian Journalist Tetyana Chornovol Attacked

(Kiev, Ukraine) Investigative journalist and activist Tetyana Chornovol, 34, was pursued and brutally attacked by a group of thugs in the early morning hours of Christmas Day. The attackers beat Chornovol to unrecognizability.
According to police, Chornovol was driving home to the village of Gora when around 1:30 a.m. her car was blocked by a sport utility car with unknown men inside. Chornovol tried to turn back, but her car was pushed to the side of the road. After she stopped the car, the men dragged Chornovol out and savagely beat her. After that, the men left Chornovol in the car and pushed it into a roadside ditch.

She was taken to a hospital in Boryspil of Kyiv Oblast.
Reportedly, the attack was prompted by Chornovol's criticism of the Ukrainian government, in particular the shady business dealings and conspicuous wealth of senior officials.

Are libertarianism and conservatism totally different?

We occasionally see some rather poorly informed claims to the effect that libertarianism and conservatism are totally different -- e.g. an article by Walter Block here.  I think therefore that a little clarification is required.  The truth can be very simply put:  Libertarianism is ONE ELEMENT in conservative thinking.  More precisely, Libertarians and conservatives share an attachment to individual liberty.

Libertarians are in some ways like Leftists.  Leftists tend to have very simple formulas for what is wrong with the world.  Ask them and they will say:  inequality, poverty and (more amusingly) intolerance.  When you realize that leading Leftists are usually well-off and are totally intolerant of dissent, you can see how uninsightful and oversimplified leftist reasoning is.   And aside from being mostly poor, libertarians are like that too.  They oversimplify enormously:  Get government out of the way and a  new Eden will dawn.

Conservatives, on the other hand see everything as complex.  They see that there can be other influences on human welfare than freedom.  For instance, when a country seems threatened by foreign aggression (as Britain was in WWII) a conservative may see national security as an important consideration that may need balancing against individual liberty  - hence conservative governments may introduce a whole range of "wartime measures" that reduce the liberties of citizens to some extent.  Conservatives try to balance competing principles.

Another revelatory case is immigration.  Since libertarians dislike governments and their restrictions, they usually favour open borders.  If libertarians had their way, most of Mexico would end up in the USA.  But conservatives see other issues as being involved -- such as pressure on welfare programs and other systems,  and the importation of the dumb political ideologies that have kept most of the Americas South of the Rio Grande mired in poverty.  What the immigrants have in their heads is important, not just the fact that they are a person. And conservatives also see it as a matter of property rights. If I have the right to say whom I will have living with me in my own home, surely groups of people (nations) also have the right to say who will live among them?

Libertarians also tend to ignore genetics.  When proposing remedies for poverty,  Leftists will say: "give the poor more money" while libertarians will say "Give the poor no money".  Neither system will usually be practical so conservatives tend to say:  "The poor ye always have with you".  With no ideology to explain everything, conservatives can simply accept reality.  As one of Britain's most prominent Conservatives recently said, some people are equipped mentally to do well and some are not.  Leftists usually cry "racism" when genetics are mentioned so the conservative response is usually implicit rather than explicit these days.  That people are born different underlies a lot of conservative thinking even though it can be risky to say that out loud.

Similarly with homosexual "marriage".  Leftists see it simply  as an equality issue, libertarians see it simply as a liberty issue while conservatives see it as impacting on many other things  -- such as morality and the family and a general devaluation of marriage.

So conservatives try to align their thinking with the complexity of reality while libertarians have a "one size fits all" explanation and solution for all problems.  Conservatives value liberty but don't think it is the answer to everything.  And the  only liberty Leftists value is your liberty to do what they say

Postal Rate Hike

(Washington, D.C.) Next month the U.S. Postal Service will raise the rate for a first-class stamp to 49 cents, a three-cent hike. The new rate is authorized for two years.

Frankly, I think the decision-makers will find a way to make the hike permanent. In any event, don't be surprised if the stamp reaches a buck each.

Mikhail Kalashnikov, b.1919 - d.2013

Mikhail Kalashnikov

(Izevsk, Russia)
Mikhail Kalashnikov, the inventor of the most famous assault rifle in the world, has died at the age of 94.

The weapon he designed became a symbol of revolutionary struggle, a favourite prop in photographs for guerrilla leaders and presidents, a key part of the armoury of many states and was even included in some national flags.

The former tank mechanic, who had been suffering from heart problems in the last few years, died in the town of Izevsk, the same place where the Avtomat Kalashnikova model 1947 (AK-47) was first produced. He is expected to be given an official funeral with dignitaries from the Kremlin attending.
Kalashnikov died after a prolonged illness.

Christmas!

A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL WHO COME BY HERE!

And if you are going to church, I hope the sermon is a good one.  The sermons can get pretty boring in some of the old-line churches these days.  With a bit of luck the minister might even talk about Redemption, which is what Christmas is all about.  But talking about Redemption involves talking about SIN!  So I doubt that you will hear much about Redemption in a lot of churches.

I am not so far planning to attend a service this year but we will see.  I went to a rather good Christmas carol service at Wynnum Presbyterian church on Sunday.

Elves and Environmentalists Halt Road Project

(Reykjavik, Iceland) People on a fairly isolated volcanic island in the middle of the ocean should not be faulted for believing in strange stuff.
Elf advocates have joined forces with environmentalists to urge the Icelandic Road and Coastal Commission and local authorities to abandon a highway project building a direct route from the Alftanes peninsula, where the president has a home, to the Reykjavik suburb of Gardabaer.

They fear disturbing elf habitat and claim the area is particularly important because it contains an elf church.

The project has been halted until the Supreme Court of Iceland rules on a case brought by a group known as Friends of Lava, who cite both the environmental and the cultural impact — including the impact on elves — of the road project. The group has regularly brought hundreds of people out to block the bulldozers.
This episode arguably demonstrates that environmentalists are dedicated political opportunists rather than defenders of the pristine.

De-Federalize welfare -- hand it all over to the States

Americans need government for some things but no American needs TWO governments for anything

The welfare state is a nightmare.  Programs such as Medicaid are fiscal catastrophes. The food stamp program is riddled with waste. The EITC is easily defrauded, even sending checks to prisoners. And housing subsidies are a recipe for the worst forms of social engineering.  The entire system should be tossed in the trash.

Why not take all income-redistribution programs, put them into a single block grant, and then transfer the money - and responsibility - to state governments?  Here's my argument for decentralization and federalism.

In an ideal world, the block grant would gradually diminish so that states would be responsible for both the collection and disbursement of all monies related to welfare. But that's a secondary issue. The main benefit of this federalist approach is that you stop the Washington-driven expansion of the welfare state and you trigger the creation of 50 separate experiments on how best to provide a safety net. Some states might choose a basic income. Others might retain something very similar to the current system. Others might try a workfare-based approach, while some could dream up new ideas that wouldn't stand a chance in a one-size-fits-all system run out of Washington, DC. And as states adopted different systems, they could learn from each other about what works and what doesn't work. And since it's easier to influence decisions that are closer to home, taxpayers at the state level almost certainly would have more ability to impact what happens with their money.

Last but not least, I'm just a policy wonk, but I think the federalism strategy also has political appeal. As just noted, it worked with welfare reform. And I suspect a lot of non-libertarians and non-conservatives will intuitively understand that you'll get better results if you allow diversity and experimentation at the state level.

P.S. There would be some bad news if we decentralized the welfare state. It could mean an end to the Moocher Hall of Fame.

P.P.S. Replacing the welfare state with a (hopefully shrinking) block grant only addresses the problem of "means-tested" programs. If you also want to solve the problem of old-age entitlements, that requires Medicare reform and Social Security reform.

Texas Woman Caught in Prostitution Sting

(Dallas, Texas) A 20-year-old local woman, Erica Amanda Flynn, has been accused of compelling a 16-year-old girl into prostitution.
Flynn was arrested Wednesday night after a police sting. Child Exploitation Unit detectives had responded to a Backpage.com ad and set up a “two girl show” at a hotel along the North Central Expressway near Old East Dallas.

Both Flynn and the juvenile showed up to the hotel, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Detectives took Flynn and the girl to their office and interviewed them.

Police said the 16-year-old told them that she had known Flynn for four or five years, and that she was aware of her age. The girl told investigators that the two teamed up and had sex with men, but Flynn kept all the money.
Flynn was booked into custody at the Dallas County Jail with bail set at $50,000.

Tennessee Woman Pinched for Drugs Near School

(Johnson City, Tennessee) A 24-year-old Knoxville woman, Crystal Hester, has been accused of selling drugs near a school.

Hester faces two counts of selling crack cocaine and selling in a drug-free school zone.
A Johnson City police report said investigators were able to buy crack cocaine from Crystal Hester, 24, 2916 Wimpole Ave., on two separate occasions, with one of the purchases occurring within 1,000 feet of a public school.
Hester was booked into custody at the Washington County Detention Center with bond set at $201,000.

A&E Fires Phil

“Duck Dynasty” star and patriarch Phil Robertson came face to face with the political correctness police at A&E again this week when he dared to go “off script” during a GQ interview.

Last May, the network requested that the #1 show in cable TV history eliminate its references to God and guns, but Phil said no: “God and guns are part of our everyday lives [and] to remove either of them from the show is unacceptable. If we can't pray to God on the show, then we will not do the show.”

Responding to a question about sin in the current edition of GQ, Phil replied in his colloquial manner, “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there.” He then paraphrased 1 Corinthians: “Don't be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers – they won't inherit the kingdom of God. Don't deceive yourself. It's not right.”

The reaction from the two most infamous proponents of gender confusion and homosexual normalization was swift and predictable. The so-called “Human Rights” Campaign  protested, “Phil Robertson's remarks are not consistent with the values of our faith communities or the scientific findings of leading medical organizations. We also know that Americans of faith follow the Golden Rule – treating others with the respect and dignity you'd wish to be treated with. As a role model on a show that attracts millions of viewers, Phil Robertson has a responsibility to set a positive example for young Americans.”

Well, we think Phil did set a positive example for young Americans!

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (contact) complained, “Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil's lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe. He clearly knows nothing about gay people or the majority of Louisianans … who support [them].” They accused Robertson of “vile and extreme stereotypes” and “hateful anti-gay comments.”

As for “the majority of Louisianans,” Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal clarified, “Phil Robertson and his family are great citizens of the state of Louisiana. The politically correct crowd is tolerant of all viewpoints – except those they disagree with. I don't agree with quite a bit of stuff I read in magazine interviews or see on TV. In fact, come to think of it, I find a good bit of it offensive. But I also acknowledge that this is a free country and everyone is entitled to express their views. In fact, I remember when TV networks believed in the First Amendment. It is a messed up situation when Miley Cyrus gets a laugh, and Phil Robertson gets suspended.”

When it comes to opposing the homosexual agenda, Christians are now routinely condemned for speaking their beliefs. But the tyranny of political correctness is anathema to America itself, and enslaving all of us to a particular code of thought deemed acceptable to leftists is no different from any other kind of slavery.

Carolina Educator Accused of Sex with Student

(Beaufort, South Carolina) A 29-year-old school psychologist with the Beaufort County School District, Megan Michelle Snipes, has been accused of engaging in a sexual act with a student.

Snipes faces one count of sexual battery of a student.
The mother of a 16-year old Battery Creek High School student contacted Sheriff's deputies Thursday morning after discovering a series of communications on her phone between her son and an individual named "Megan Snipes."

Recognizing the name as that of the school's psychologist, whom her son had been regularly seeing; and in light of the sexual tone of the conversations, she became concerned and requested to file a report at the Sheriff's Office headquarters in Beaufort.[…]

Police confirmed during the course of the investigation that on October 18, Snipes did engage in a sexual act with the victim in the area of Bob Jones Field on Jones Ave in Beaufort. The incident was reportedly consensual with no aggravated coercion or force.
Snipes was booked into custody at the Beaufort County Detention Center.

Chinese Super Carrier

Report:
CHINA has declared it is building a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of a size to rival the biggest in United States naval service in the first move of a major new arms race.

Chinese website qianzhan.com cites "top People's Liberation Army" sources as saying the 110,000-ton aircraft carrier should be launched by 2020.

"By that time, China will be able to confront the most advanced US carrier-based fighter jets in high sea," the Chinese-language article reads.
Does the word belligerent come to mind? Looks like the ChiComs are gearing up to pick a fight.

Lovely, just lovely.

'I don't like the term plus-size': Tyra Banks on how body-image labels in the fashion industry are harmful to women

The lady undoubtedly has large assets but a faith that changing the name changes the reality is undoubtedly dumb.  It's the reality that people react to, not the name

Tyra Banks, who is currently campaigning with Special K to ban 'fat talk' and promote positive body image, has admitted that the label 'plus-size' is harmful to women.

The 40-year-old supermodel and America's Top Model judge, who uses the term 'fiercely real' instead, told Huffington Post Style: 'I don't like the label "plus-size".

'I don't want to use the term "plus-size," because, to me, what the hell is that? It just doesn't have a positive connotation to it. I tend to not use it.'

Florida Teacher Accused of Sex with Boy

(St. Lucie County, Florida) A 29-year-old teacher at Mariposa Elementary School, Quotaysha Jones, has been accused of engaging in sex with a teen boy.

Jones was arrested on a felony sexual assault-related charge.
Detectives began investigating Quotaysha Jones of Port St. Lucie after getting information she was having an “inappropriate relationship” with a boy who was in the St. Lucie County jail, according to an arrest report.

They reviewed video recordings of 39 visits between Jones and the teen. It became clear to detectives the two were having a romantic relationship, and their conversations included sexual innuendo and topics such as getting married, according to the report.

Detectives then separately interviewed Jones and the boy. While Jones told them her relationship with the boy is platonic, the boy said he and Jones were in a dating relationship, according to the report.

The boy, now 17, told detectives he and Jones were having sex for about a year after he turned 16 and had sex four to six times during that period, according to the report.
Jones was booked into custody at the St. Lucie County Jail.

Arizona Woman Accused of Being Loony
[Previous 2/14/13 post]
(Phoenix, Arizona) Honestly, I have yet to see a 35-year-old hosebag successfully pretend to be a 16-year-old tenderoni. But it seems that some people can pull it off.
A woman who portrayed herself online as a 16-year-old girl who was pregnant was arrested Thursday for engaging in sex acts with teenage boys, Phoenix police said.

Jennifer Dempsey, 35, is accused of contacting 14-year-old to 16-year-old boys she did not know through Facebook and then meeting them for sex acts, Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump said.

Dempsey told both victims she was pregnant and attended a meeting with one of the victim's parents, Crump said.

Crump also said for the past five years, Dempsey convinced her family she had cancer. She shaved her head, bought wigs and had a fake chemotherapy port taped to her chest to make it appear real, Crump said.

Police detectives discovered Dempsey did not have cancer, but used the claim to help avoid arrest.

"She used her cancer ploy to our detectives to try and stay out of trouble," said Crump. "She said this is the reason why she didn't engage in the sexual conduct because she was constantly ill from chemotherapy, all of which we learned in the following days, was not true."

CBS5 News spoke to several of Dempsey's neighbors who said that they would see her with a tube on her chest and assumed she was fighting cancer.
It's astonishing what goes on in some folks' brains.

A libertarian case for immigration control

(Most libertarians advocate open borders)

I know a nice libertarian-socialist fellow named Mophery Rurbt. He has a household, let us imagine, consisting of three wives (well, he is a Mormon, and the Supreme Court has legalized polygamy), and four children.

One day at his door he finds a small Bangladeshi child, looking hungry, and saying he is come all the way across the world from Bangladesh, and has no place to stay. Mophery's family all consult together, and decide they can take him in. The little Bangladeshi child is overjoyed and becomes part of the Rurbt household.

One thing he does after joining that household is Facebook message all his friends back in Bangladesh, and tell them about this generous American who will take people in. Well, they Facebook message their friends, and so on, and about a week later...

Mophery wakes up in the morning to find Bangladeshis on his lawn. And beyond his lawn. In fact, as far as the eye can see (and this is pretty far, since Mophery lives on a tall hill) darn Bangladeshis struggling to advance towards his home. He learns that every single one of them expects him to take them in.

He locks his door, and shouts out the window that he will call the police if the horde tries to force its way in.

All, but now his fellow libertarian socialists hate him. "You're telling these people where they can go at the point of a gun."

The problem is that they don't see private property as legitimate, and thus don't see Mophery's efforts to stop his home from being overwhelmed and destroyed as a useful dwelling as legitimate. But Mophery has had a sudden awakening, and realizes that his household, to be a functioning unit, has to be able to control who may or may not join. If those who are not invited to join try to force their way in anyhow, the initial quote aggression" is on their part, not on his household's.

Nation-states, too, are functioning social units. If they are to remain functioning social units, they have to be able to regulate the influx of new members. It takes an ideology to occlude this rather obvious point, and make it look as though a group declining to invite someone in is somehow threatening them "at gunpoint."

Ohio Teacher Accused of Telecommunication Harassment

(Lancaster, Ohio) A 25-year-old teacher formerly at Fisher Catholic High School, Kathleen Thomas, has been accused of sending a nude photograph to a student.
Authorities charged Kathleen Thomas with disseminating matter harmful to juveniles on Monday, months after the Fisher Catholic High School teacher allegedly texted inappropriate messages to a 17-year-old student.

Thomas also faces a charge of telecommunication harassment.

The student emailed a nude photo of Thomas to police in October, leading to a Lancaster Police investigation that resulted in the charges. The student told police Thomas asked him to respond to the text with a nude picture of his own. He said he complied with her request, but soon felt uncomfortable with the nature of the messages.
Since the charges are misdemeanors, Thomas was given a subpoena to appear.

Cannibal Social Network

(Dresden, Germany) Presumably, all rational adults will find this report disturbing.
On Nov. 4, German businessman Wojciech Stempniewicz left his native Hanover by train and made the 360-kilometer journey to Dresden. The 59-year old managed a successful trucking firm and was engaged to be married. On arrival in Dresden he met with a police worker Detlev Guenzel, who stabbed him in the neck and chopped his body into small pieces.

But this was not a straightforward murder. Police quickly announced their suspicions that part of the body had been eaten and that Stempniewicz had been a willing victim.

“The missing man had fantasized since his youth about being killed and eaten by another person,” reported Dresden police chief Dieter Kroll.

Neither was this an isolated incident. British man Geoffrey Portway was arrested in September for a plot to kill and eat a child, complete with gruesome accessories. A New York police officer is standing trial for attempting to eat his wife. German authorities estimate they have thousands of cannibals within their borders alone.

In every case, investigators discovered the cannibals had plotted their actions online, through dedicated communities with thousands of members, reaching around the world.
With 'thousands' of cannibals around the world, one might logically expect more news reports about them.

Michigan Woman Gets Prison for Sex with Boy - Update

(Ann Arbor, Michigan)
The 19-year-old Ann Arbor woman who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting an “at-risk runaway” boy two weeks after she was released from jail, where she served time for a similar offense, could spend up to 15 years in prison, according to court records.

Judge Archie Brown sentenced Ashley Poe Dec. 11 in the Washtenaw County Trial Court to 10-15 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Poe pleaded guilty to one charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct last month in exchange for the dismissal of a second count of the same charge and a habitual offender status.

A sentencing agreement was not part of the plea deal.

The sexual assault charge Poe pleaded guilty to involved penetration with a minor between 13-16. The offense took place between Sept. 12 and 15 at a residence in the 700 block of Miller Avenue in Ann Arbor.
Poe looks kind of butch, don't you think?

(Ann Arbor, Michigan) A 19-year-old local female, Ashley Poe, has been accused of engaging in sex with an underage boy.

Poe faces a charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person between the ages of 13 and 15 and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Poe is accused of assaulting the boy — who police call an “at-risk runaway" — two weeks after she was released from jail. She served a one-year sentence for a similar crime, to which she pleaded no contest last year.

Court records show a bench warrant was issued for Poe after a home visit by her probation officer on Sept. 12. During the visit, the officer found Poe was living with a friend and her infant child in Miller Manor, a low income housing complex in the 700 block of Miller Avenue.
Poe was booked into custody at the Washtenaw County Jail without bond.

Oprah: Generations 'marinated' in racism will need to die out for discrimination to end

So it's people marinated in racism that made her a billionaire?  Does she think she is white?

Oprah Winfrey has said racism is still a problem around the world and the only way for it to end is for generations of racists to die out.

In an interview with the BBC to coincide with the release of her latest film The Butler, the chat show host said generations had been 'marinated' in racism.

The 59-year-old added that President Obama was treated with disrespect because of the color of his skin and said she feels fortunate to have been born after segregation ended in the U.S.

When asked if some of the challenges faced by Obama were down to the color of his skin, Winfrey, who had been a high-profile backer of his presidential campaign, said: 'There's no question'.

She highlighted an incident in 2009 when Republican congressman Joe Wilson called out 'you lie', as Obama gave a speech to Congress.

'I think there's a level of disrespect for the office that occurs,' she said. 'And that occurs in some cases ... because he's African American. There's no question about that. And it's the kind of thing no one ever says, but everybody's thinking.'

Her opinion upset some critics, with a news website dedicated to 'exposing and neutralizing liberal media bias' accusing her of 'playing the race card'.

The News Busters site said Winfrey was narrow-minded for focusing solely on racism against the black community, and added that it was 'patently absurd to suggest that racism is caused by old white people when racism and religious bigotry cut across all generations and ethnicities'.

Alabama Educator Accused of Sex with Student

(Pelham, Alabama) A 33-year-old assistant principal formerly at Pelham High School, Catherine Michelle Bell, has been accused of engaging in sex with a student.

Bell faces three counts of school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19 years.
The sheriff's office says the Pelham Police Department referred the investigation to them. Investigators with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office and the Shelby County D.A. decided there was enough probable cause to arrest Bell on the charges of sex with a student.

Bell resigned from her position on Nov. 21, according to a statement from the Shelby County School system.

A Shelby County Schools spokesperson says the district took immediate action when they first found out about the allegations.

"The employee was placed on administrative leave while the matter was being investigated by the school district, with the assistance of local law enforcement. She subsequently resigned from her position on November 21," the statement says.
Bell was booked into custody at the Shelby County Jail and released on $90,000 bond.

Illinois Woman Accused of Unlawful Tampering of Food

(Pekin, Illinois) A local man, Joshua Brewster, told a woman, Amanda Pollard, 28, that he didn't want her living with him anymore.

Pollard reportedly retaliated by putting rat poison in Brewster's coffee, tucking a severed electric blanket cord under his mattress and pissing in his bottle of mouthwash.

Pollard faces counts of felony unlawful tampering of food and misdemeanor counts of trespassing and criminal damage to property.
The friend reportedly found Pollard cutting the blanket cord. She told him of her “payback” intent, her mouthwash sabotage and the rat poison she said she also put in a cereal box, according to the affidavit.

Questioned later by police, Pollard acknowledged she laced Brewster’s coffee with the poison but denied the other acts. She said she was “hurt and angry” over her eviction, the affidavit stated.
Pollard was booked into custody with bond set at $50,000.

Snow in Cairo for the first time in 112 years

Al Gore must be there.  Gaia often thumbs its nose at him

WHEN you think Cairo you think heat and sand.  But something unusual happened there overnight - it snowed!  According to local reports it's the first time snow has fallen in the Egyptian capital in 112 years.

Incredible pictures show the normally sweltering city coated in white.  Egyptians took to Twitter to post their amazement in words and pictures.

The Egyptian Meteorological Authority warned on Wednesday the unusual weather will drive down temperatures to between 5 and 15 Celsius.

Snow was reported on Mt. Sinai and Saint Catherine's monastery at the base of the mountain.

A powerful winter storm is affecting parts of the Middle East.

Sections of Israel saw heavy snow up to about a metre.  Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat told The Times of Israel, "We're facing a rare storm the likes of which we've never seen."  The local meteorological agency said it was the worst snowstorm seen since at least 1953.

The Holy City was closed to traffic and the nation's military was called out to rescue some 1500 people stranded in vehicles.

Highways and roads to Tel Aviv, the Golan Heights and other locales were reportedly closed.  Ben-Gurion International Airport was forced to close for a period due to the snow and limited visibilities.

Other countries including Turkey and Syria also experienced widespread snow.

Kentucky Mom Attempts to Sell Newborn

(Louisville, Kentucky) A 24-year-old Hardin County mother, Leeann Brown (aka Leeanna Brown), has been accused of attempting to sell her newborn daughter on two separate occasions.

Brown tried to sell the girl for $5,000 to her cousin and then another person.
The 24-year-old mother was originally charged with endangering the welfare of a minor, but those charges have now been upgraded to selling a child, a felony. Police say they are considering two more charges after they discovered she has two other children living with two different families and that they may have been sold as well.

The cousin went to police when Brown wanted the baby back, saying she was trying to collect enough money to pay court fines and attorney fees from prior convictions.
Brown was booked into custody at the Hardin County Jail.

Folding Phone Sex into University Ethnic Studies?

(Denver, Colorado)
[hiss!…click!…pop!…] "Good morning from the University of Colorado Denver! You've reached the phone number of the Ethnic Studies Department's cultural diversity coordinator."

"At the sound of the tone, please state the type of erotic service you are seeking. Current phone sex rate is $1.49 per minute."

"Have a stimulating day!"…[click]

Above is an inaccurate but substantively realistic representation of the presumed voicemail message from the office of Resa Cooper-Morning, 54, recently suspended cultural diversity coordinator for the university's Ethnic Studies Department.
Officials at the University of Colorado Denver launched an investigation into Cooper-Morning’s business after allegations surfaced that she was accepting calls from her phone sex operation while at her office.

But users could also link to the woman’s phone sex website, where users could pay to talk dirty with her. However, her available hours listed on the website matched her 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. schedule with the university.

Netanyahu did not bow down to the Mandela whitewash

I was shocked when I read that Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would not be attending the funeral of Nelson Mandela in South Africa because it was too expensive to travel there. Seriously?

It appears that the real issue was not the expense of the trip but rather the fact that Mr. Mandela had compared the situation of South African blacks under the apartheid system with the situation of Palestinians living in the so-called occupied territories, also praising Yasser Arafat.

In an opinion piece for Al-Jazeerah, Hanna Kawas, Chairperson for the Canada Palestine Association, lamented the loss of Mr. Mandela, praising him as a great friend of the Palestinians. She noted that in 1997 he stated, “But we know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians,” while in 1990 he said, “I believe that there are many similarities between our struggle and that of the PLO. We live under a unique form of colonialism in South Africa, as well as in Israel, and a lot flows from that.”

In a clip played by Ted Koppel on ABC, Mr. Mandela also stated that, “We identify with the PLO because, just like ourselves, they are fighting for the right of self determination. . . . Arafat is a comrade in arms.”

And in a 1990 interview with Australian media, he said, “We agree with the United Nations that international disputes should be settled by peaceful means. The belligerent attitude which is adopted by the Israeli government is to us unacceptable,” also explaining that his organization, the ANC, does not consider the PLO a terrorist group.”

He added: “If one has to refer to any of the parties as a terrorist state, one might refer to the Israeli government, because they are the people who are slaughtering defenseless and innocent Arabs in the occupied territories, and we don’t regard that as acceptable.”

Texas Woman Gets Prison for Child Sex Abuse

(Gilmer, Texas) A 44-year-old local woman, Rosie Evans Fluellen, has pleaded guilty to child sex charges.

As a result, Fluellen has been sentenced to 28 years in prison.
Upshur County’s Judge Lauren Parish of the 115th Judicial District Court sentenced Rosie Evans Fluellen, 44, to prison for criminal responsibility for the conduct of another and aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to information provided by Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd.

Fluellen’s husband and former Gilmer pastor Hugo Fluellen, 54, is serving six consecutive life sentences after a jury convicted him in October of several counts of indecency with a child, aggravated sexual assault of a child and sexual assault of a child.

Evidence presented during his trial showed he began inappropriately touching his victim when she was in the second grade and while he was a pastor, and that he would often molest the child on the way home from church, eventually fathering a child with her.
Ugly story, eh?

Fox News anchor declares that 'Jesus and Santa are verifiably white'

Both were Middle Easterners and Middle Easterners are generally white  -- though not as white as the Irish or the Poles, of course.  St. Nick was what we now would call a Turk and Turks today would be most offended if you said they were not white.  The very white lady above has a Turkish name: Aydan Ulugun

Fox News host Megyn Kelly caused controversy last night as she confidently declared that not only is Santa Claus white but Jesus Christ is too.

Despite logic dictating that a man born in the Middle East more than 2,000 years ago would at the very least have been olive-skinned - Kelly announced her asertion that Jesus was white to be fact and 'verifiable'.

While no physical descriptions of Jesus definitively exist, Kelly made her absurd statement during Wednesday's edition of The Kelly File as she discussed a Slate article that suggested a more inclusive Santa for the tens of millions of Americans who are not white.

Kelly said when she saw the piece by Aisha Harris titled, 'Santa Claus Should Not Be a White Man Anymore' she laughed.

'Oh this is so ridiculous,' she said, 'Yet another person claiming it's racist to have a white Santa. You know?'

'And by the way, for all you kids watching at home, Santa just is white,' she added, 'but this person is just arguing that maybe we should also have a black Santa.'
