Vietnamese Boat People
(Osaka, Japan) Twenty-three Vietnamese boat people, who arrived in Japan between 1989 and 1991, are currently on a hunger strike at a detention center while awaiting deportation. All had previously served time in Japanese prisons for murder, theft and other serious crimes and, upon release, were ordered deported. Unfortunately, the Vietnamese government refuses to allow their return since they are former boat people (not to mention, murderers and thieves). Therefore, they're stuck in a detention center without a country to call home.
Tough situation.
