Horse Steaks
(Mason, Ohio) According to this report, many people were upset when they heard that The Red Derby Restaurant was legally selling horsemeat dinners. The advertising campaign for the restaurant serving sizzling horse steaks and horse burgers resulted in hundreds of telephone and e-mail complaints and even death threats. There was no need to protest, however, because the restaurant and advertising campaign were part of a hoax created by a horse lovers group called Second Chance Horse Rescue. The hoax was intended to motivate people to donate money.
The group's founder, Alice Crow, said there are 150,000 horses slaughtered each year for human consumption in other countries and, since 2002, her group has rescued 200. Golly, Alice, in two years, you've rescued 200 horses. That's 100 horses per year which means that 149,900 horses each year weren't rescued. It doesn't look like you are ever going to make a big dent in the overall numbers. Maybe you should change the name of your group from Second Chance Horse Rescue to Snowball's Chance Horse Rescue, just for the sake of accuracy in advertising, of course.
