American Professor Killed in Brazil
(Sao Paulo, Brazil) While being robbed in a small town in the Amazon rain forest, Professor James Petersen, 51, was shot to death. U.S. Embassy spokesman John Wilcox said Petersen died in a restaurant in the town of Iranduba, about 1,650 miles northwest of Sao Paulo.
Petersen, Chairman of the University of Vermont Anthropology Department, was doing research in the rain forest. According to one source, three suspects were apprehended but the information is unconfirmed.
