(Wadsworth, Texas) A letter of intent to submit an application to build and operate two new advanced boiling water nuclear power plants has already been submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
From TheFacts.com:
The president of NRG Energy, a company that owns and operates power-generating facilities in Texas, announced Wednesday plans to build two additional nuclear power units at the South Texas Project Electric Generating Station near Wadsworth in Matagorda County.Growing energy demand is cited as the reason for the new facilities. The project is expected to be completed by 2014 while creating 6,000 jobs during the peak construction period and 1,000 new permanent staff positions.
The planned units will be built next to two existing nuclear reactors at the 12,220-acre power plant site.
Makes sense to me. Nuclear power plants have proven to be safe, clean, and reliable providers of electricity. Rationally, there shouldn't be any objection to the project. Irrationally, I'm certain the environmentalists will voice their opposition.
