(Belgrade, Serbia) A ruptured oil tank at a crude processing plant near the Romanian border is being blamed for a 980-foot wide oil slick in the Danube River.
From UPI.com:
A 62-mile-long waste oil slick is moving down the Danube River from Serbia, threatening to pollute waters in Bulgaria and Romania.Heavy financial losses and ecological damages are expected.
Mayor Ivan Tsankov, of the western Bulgarian town of Vidin, said Wednesday local authorities banned using water from the Danube and fishing in the river, the Serbian B92 Belgrade radio reported.
Bulgaria's ecology ministry has demanded an investigation into the pollution by all European countries through which the Danube flows.
On a totally unrelated note, just what was Johann Strauss looking at when he composed The Blue Danube Waltz? I've seen the Danube. It's not blue, it's brown. Strauss must have been blind.
