(Newton, North Carolina) A 29-year-old woman from adjacent Lincoln County, Betty Jo Herman, is in jail in Catawba County for allegedly engaging in sex with a young boy. The boy's mother notified the police after learning of the sexual contact. Herman is said to be a friend of the family of the boy.
Herman is charged with first-degree rape of a child and is in custody with bond set at $50,000.
