(Fresno, California) Yesterday, a member of the radical Muslims of the Americas group, Ramadan Abdullah, was sentenced to life in prison for the 2001 killing of a Fresno County Sheriff's Deputy Erik Telen. Last Friday, Fresno County Superior Court Judge Ralph Nunez found Abdullah, 27, guilty of first-degree murder with special circumstances for fatally shooting Telen.
Judge Nunez sentenced Abdullah to life in prison without parole. Defense lawyers argued that Abdullah should be instead treated for mental illness and have the possibility of parole. The judge denied any consideration of parole but did recommend treatment while incarcerated.
Abdullah's lawyers said he was remorseful. Abdullah said nothing during yesterday's proceedings.
