Maine Teacher Gets 30 Days in Boy Sex Case

(Machias, Maine) A 31-year-old teacher formerly at Lubec Consolidated School, Tina Mason, pleaded no contest yesterday in Washington County Superior Court to charges of sex assault, sex abuse and sexual touching, all misdemeanors, stemming from a relationship with a 13-year-old boy. The victim was a friend of Mason's two sons, ages 6 and 10.
“There is nothing I can say that will make this situation any better,” Mason tearfully told the judge. “Please think of my own children. Who will protect them if I’m not there?”
As a result, Justice Kevin Cuddy sentenced Mason to 30 days in jail.
In addition to the 30 days in jail, Mason received two consecutive suspended sentences of 11 months in jail, each with one year of probation.

If Mason violates the terms of her probation after her release, she could end up serving 22 months of additional jail time. She also was ordered to pay a $400 fine.
Also, Mason will be required to register as a sex offender for 10 years and permanently surrender her teaching credentials.
