(Liverpool, England) After returning from honorable service in Iraq and Afghanistan, British Lance Corporal Mark Aspinall was enjoying an entertaining evening on the town with friends before being accosted by three police constables for no apparent reason and pummeled on the pavement.
Although the episode was all caught on CCTV, Aspinall was convicted of police assault and disrupting public order. He was sentenced to a suspended prison term and community service. Inexplicably, Aspinall was also ordered to pay compensation.
Holy friggin' moly!
Fortunately, the verdict was reversed on appeal to the Liverpool Crown Court where Judge John Phipps expressed his outrage. Judge Phipps remarked:
'Where is this man of violence? I am shocked and appalled at the level of police violence shown here.'I would agree. Meanwhile, the Greater Manchester Police Department is investigating.
The judge said he had 'great concerns' about the CCTV footage and questioned the truthfulness of the officers' statements.
'I would go as far as to say the statements contain untruths,' he added.
