Chinese Submarine Damages Towed U.S. Sonar

(Washington) A Chinese submarine collided with an underwater sonar array towed by the destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) off the coast of the Philippines.

The incident reportedly occurred Thursday. The name of the Chinese submarine wasn't reported.
There were reports the underwater collision took place near Subic free port in Olongapo City, Zambales province, which the Philippines' naval force could not confirm.
An unnamed U.S. military official said he believed the collision was accidental.

The USS McCain is one of the warships with U.S. Pacific Command Forces participating in annual exercises with the Philippine Navy.
