(Lexington, Kentucky) A 27-year-old music teacher at Christ the King School, Courtney Bishop, pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in the gruesome death of her 1-month-old son, Caleb.
Bishop took a plea to avoid trial, scheduled for Monday, on initial charges of murder and criminal abuse.
In accordance with the plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend five years in prison when she is sentenced for the homicide. The medical examiner said the death was caused by blunt force trauma to the head. In addition to a skull fracture, Caleb had retinal hemorrhaging and a broken leg.
During her court appearance today she explained her actions. She told the judge; "It was in my care at the time. And I didn't see that he could've been hurt or possibly... possibly died."Part of the underlying cause could be that she saw her infant son as an "it." In my opinion, the cruel nature of the crime justifies more punishment than the prosecutor says is sought.
