Court Denies Food Stamps for Dog

(Newton, Pennsylvania) A three-judge panel denied a request by 55-year-old James Douris for his service dog to receive food stamps.
For the past year, James Douris, a disabled 55-year-old veteran living in the Philadelphia suburb of Newton, has been fighting to get additional food stamps for him and his dog, and to have his service dog, a boxer, recognized as his dependent.
The court was sympathetic but couldn't honor the request because the dog is not a person.
