Ohio Teacher Guilty in Sex Case - Updated
[Previous 2/15/11 post]
(Medina, Ohio) Thirty-five-year-old math and language arts teacher Kelly Covic was found guilty today by a jury on one count of sexual battery and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Covic continues to deny that she had sex with two 14-year-old boys.
During closing arguments on Monday, prosecutors told the jury that Covic violated the trust of the students and their families.

"It's not about nurturing, it was never about nurturing, it's about corrupting the system," said assistant prosecutor Anne Eisenhower. "It's about the corruption of the relationship between teachers and students, between adults and children."

But Covic's attorney told the jury that her young accusers tried to blackmail their teacher, and are lying about what happened.

"If you convict Kelly of these charges, you will have allowed these troubled kids, these admitted juvenile delinquents to have pulled off their little trick," said Richard Lillie.
Sentencing is scheduled for April 4.
