(Ithaca, New York) In January 2010, a 31-year-old local mother-of-six children, Amanda Rojas, was arrested for engaging in sex with a 13-year-old boy. Rojas was charged with second-degree rape.
In June, Rojas pleaded guilty in Tompkins County Court to second-degree rape.
Rojas admitted to having intercourse with the male at her residence repeatedly between June and October 2009. Rojas and the male had sex 15 times, according to court documents.Nevertheless, Rojas was sentenced by Judge John Rowley to six months in jail and 10 years of probation.
Rojas' attorney Ciano Lama sought asked that Rojas be sentenced to 10 years probation.
Incarceration would hurt Rojas' six children, he said, adding that Rojas grew up in foster care and has struggled with marijuana addiction. Rojas cooperated with police, accepted responsibility and confessed to the crime, which likely occurred because Rojas hasn't received enough treatment, Lama argued.
