Twitter Troubles

High-profile sports figures have discovered that Twitter can be problematic if they send out tweets during the heat of competition and other times of stress and turmoil.

Consequences can be damaging.
Australian Olympic swimming champion Stephanie Rice … was dropped by her sponsor Jaguar after tweeting an apparently homophobic insult in the wake of a narrow Tri‑Nations victory for the Wallabies over the Springboks.

The slur – she tweeted "Suck on that faggots" – sparked a public debate and led to her losing not only her sponsorship deal but also her £60,000 car.

Rice has apologised and insists she is not homophobic.
Similar incidents of indiscretion by sports stars regularly occur. Slurs, barbs, name-calling and even sensitive disclosures from team strategy sessions get tweeted. Obviously, many athletes send out their 140-word or less compositions before thinking.
