Armored Vehicles Fight Violence in Rio

(Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) At least 23 people have been killed in the ongoing violence between drug gangs and Brazilian authorities in local slums. The level of violence has surged since last Sunday with attacks on police stations and burning of vehicles.

The government has sent in security forces backed by armored vehicles. Over 150 arrests have been made.

Reportedly, the recent uptick in violent attacks has been ordered by jailed gang members. Consequently, recently arrested gang members are being shipped to remote jails so they can't contact their buddies.
