(Johnson County, Kansas) Yesterday, former Shawnee Mission West teacher and cheerleading coach Michelle Preston was sentenced to three years of probation for engaging in sex with three male students.
The students were 17 or 18 when the sexual encounters took place at Preston’s home in 2010. Although the students were of consensual age in Kansas, Preston was prosecuted under a law governing teachers and their students.Note that Preston only risks prison if she violates probation. Meanwhile, she will have to register as a sex offender for 25 years.
Prosecutors did not oppose probation for Preston primarily because of the victims’ ages, said Assistant District Attorney Keith Henderson.
All three victims agreed with the outcome, he said. Preston was treated the same as if she had been a male teacher having sex with female students, he added.[ed. bold]As an aside, I don't believe that last statement can be supported. Interested-Participant has been chronicling female sex offenders for over six years and empirical evidence gathered thus far strongly suggests the opposite is true.
Nationwide, female sex offenders are generally treated leniently.
